ABSTRACT:

The freshwater pearl mussel is one of the many threatened freshwater mussels in Europe. The stronghold of this important flagship indicator species is in northern areas of Europe. Even north of the Arctic Circle strong populations occur. In this presentation, various aspects of the biology and environmental conditions will be highlighted, as well as some comparison between different parts of the distribution area of the species. Aspects of the parasitic stage, growth and various ecosystem functions and services will be discussed. In addition, some aspects of their management and recovery plans will be raised.
