The activities of the Environmental Radiactivity Laboratory (LARAM) started on 1950 in the Chair of Physics of the Professor Joaquín Catalá de Alemany, in the former Faculty of Sciences of the University of Valencia. Latter the laboratory came to be attached to the department of Fundamental Physics and Theoretical and Experimental Physics, directed by the Professor Fernando Senent Pérez, and then it became integrated in the IFIC (joint centre CSIC-UV). Since 1995 it is attached too to (the Environmental Radiactivity Laboratory to) the Central Service for Experimental Research (SCSIE), dependent on the Office of the Vice-principal for Research, dedicated to both research in the field of environmental radiactivity and of the development of radiactivity measurements for all type of clients, institutional or individual.

Among the projects in which LARAM participates we can highlight the programme REM (Sampling Station Network), according to the agreement with the Nuclear Safety Council, whose objective is the continuous environmental radiology monitoring in our country. The PVRA Quality Control analysis of the Cofrentes Nuclear Power Plant are also developed, through an agreement with the Valencian Government, as well as the analysis of the radiactive content of human consumption water (according to the Royal Decree 140/2003 7 February, which establishes the health criteria for the quality of human consumption water, modified by the Royal Decree 314/2016 29 July), then the LARAM obtained on December 2011 the ENAC certification for the determination of some of the radiactive parameters that refer to this decree and being the first laboratory of the University of Valencia in obtaining such certification.

Currently, analysis of radon concentration in the workplace is developed, in fulfillment of the Royal Decree 1439/2010 (Article 63. Protection against the exposure of terrestrial sources of natural radiation).

Regarding to research in the field of environmental radiactivity has resulted in the publication of different theses, dissertations, Undergraduate Degree final projects and numerous articles in specialised journals. We can mention some of the theses: “Eliminación de radioisótopos del agua durante su proceso de potabilización” (Elimination of radioisotopes from the water during its purification process” (Lorenzo Monforte Monleón, 1989) or “Medidas de Uranio, Torio y Radio en muestras ambientales por espectometría alfa. Aplicación de un modelo unidimensional de transporte de radionúclidos en el rio Júcar” (Measures of Uranium, Thorium and Radio in environmental samples by alpha spectometry. Application of one-dimensional model of radionuclide transport in the river Júcar) (MªJosé Rodríguez Alvarez, 1998). Likewise, at the LARAM it have been designed equipments that can lower the detection limit associated to measures and that are being used in different laboratories.
