Arid areas, such as those in the Canary Islands archipelago, are highly vulnerable to climate change and anthropogenic pressure, which threaten their biodiversity and functionality. This thesis analyses the role of underground mutualisms, especially mycorrhizal symbiosis, in ecological restoration. The work integrates field studies and controlled experiments that link functional traits, inoculum origin and plant-plant dynamics under water stress, providing an applied basis for restoration.
