CaFeCiCo 14/05/2026: Plant establishment under climatic disequilibrium: A Mediterranean perspective

Climatic disequilibrium, defined as the mismatch between the macroclimatic conditions experienced by a population at a given location and the climatic niche optimum of a species, is increasingly used in ecology to quantify discrepancies between vegetation and climate. These mismatches are expected to intensify in the coming decades under climate change, with potentially severe consequences for biodiversity-rich regions such as the Mediterranean. Interestingly, shifts in vegetation structure and distribution are less frequent than might be expected.
In this talk, we address the following questions: Does climatic disequilibrium affect plant establishment? What other factors mediate this process? And what can we expect in the future?
