On Monday, 13 April at 10:00, a webinar organised by Agronomy will take place under the title Main Innovations in the Revised Version of FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper 56: Guidelines for Computing Crop Water Requirements. The event will feature the participation of Ramón López Urrea, CSIC researcher at the Desertification Research Centre (CIDE).

Over recent decades, the FAO56 manual has become a global reference for estimating crop evapotranspiration and determining crop water requirements under a wide range of agricultural conditions. However, significant advances in scientific knowledge, increased data availability, enhanced modelling capabilities, and growing pressure resulting from climate variability and water scarcity have made an update necessary. The revised guidelines incorporate key scientific and technical improvements, including more robust procedures for the assessment and correction of meteorological data, expanded information on crop coefficients, updated approaches for estimating actual crop evapotranspiration, and the integration of new data sources such as gridded meteorological datasets and remote sensing.

This webinar brings together researchers and practitioners working in the fields of evapotranspiration, agriculture, and water management to examine these innovations, their scientific foundations, and their practical implications, highlighting their potential to improve decision-making and promote more efficient and sustainable use of agricultural water resources.

Professor López Urrea, who has extensive experience in crop evapotranspiration studies, irrigation scheduling optimisation, and the improvement of water-use efficiency and productivity in agricultural systems, will present the topic “Key Innovations in the Tabulated Kc and Kcb Values for Fruit Trees, Shrubs and Vines.”
