Groundwater in a river basin/Pxhere

We are looking for a candidate to work in this center and to carry out the doctoral thesis.

- Project Title: "Geogenic and anthropogenic influences on groundwater health status in a Mediterranean river basin". Reference PID2022-138556OB-C22, funded by MCIN/ AEI / 10.13039/501100011033 / FEDER, UE.

- Objective of the work: The work is included in the project "Developing strategies for controlling anthropogenic and geogenic pollutants in groundwater" (WATERPOLLUT), a coordinated project in which the SAMA research group of the Universitat de València participates and which aims to address the prevention and mitigation of groundwater pollution in urban and peri-urban areas, paying special attention to the occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs), their anthropogenic and natural sources of contamination in groundwater and the processes that control their behavior in the subsurface at the field scale. The main objectives of the project are:

(i) To develop, apply and standardize comprehensive analytical strategies to establish the presence of a large number of ECs.

ii) Provide new knowledge on the spatial and temporal distribution of ECs, including organics and their transformation products, microplastics as well as geogenic and anthropogenic trace elements in groundwater over space and time and the interaction between these ECs, and assess the potential risk linked to drinking water consumption.

iii) Establish new methods to identify and quantify aquifer recharge sources and their composition in each specific context using the combination of trace elements and organic contaminants together with hydrochemical data (e.g., stable isotopes and major ions).
