On the occasion of the CSIC Science Week 2023, from the CIDE we have organized an activity entitled: 'Projection and discussion of the documentary Misión Eurídice'. The activity will take place next Monday 13th November at 19:00h in the Salón de Actos of the Casa de la Ciencia del CSIC, C/Bailia nº 1 in Valencia.

In this activity, we will address the issue of the degradation of the marine environment, and in particular the presence of fishing nets accidentally lost at sea, through the projection of the documentary Misión Eurídice. The projection will be in the original version: Italian (with spanish subtitles). It will be followed by a debate with the researchers, Dyana Vitale, PhD in Applied Biology and Experimental Medicine, Marine Biologist and PhD Researcher at the University of Valencia (SAMA-UV), at the Desertification Research Center (CIDE, CSIC-UV-GVA) and Andrea Spinelli, PhD in Marine Biology and Ecology, Researcher and Scientific Disseminator at FUNDACIÓN Oceanogràfic, Valencia.

Every year, 640,000 tons of fishing nets are abandoned in the oceans (according to annual reports by the United Nations Environment Program; UNEP) and the figures are increasing. Thousands of square meters of lost fishing nets are scattered over larger and larger areas of our seabed, causing an increasing form of degradation of these ecosystems. In the Mediterranean, ghost nets are covering larger and larger areas of underwater walls or banks, causing a progressive destruction of all forms of life, especially coral and fish fauna.

To attend the viewing and subsequent debate, prior registration and reservation of place is required at the following email: cultura.cide@csic.es

Organized by: Desertification Research Center (CIDE, CSIC-UV-GVA) and Casa de la Ciencia del CSIC in Valencia.

In collaboration with: Oceanogràfic Foundation.
