Every September 14 since 2016 we celebrate Ecology Day, which promotes global initiatives in the field of ecology with the perspective of bringing it closer to society and highlighting its importance in our daily lives.

The date, September 14, honors the day that Ernst Haeckel published Ökologie und Chorologie in 1866. The Portuguese Society of Ecology (SPECO) has been coordinating the initiative of promoting and celebrating Ecology Day worldwide, in close association with European Ecological Federation (EEF) since 2017.

In this framework, the Desertification Research Centre (CIDE) wants to focus on this day on one of the greatest environmental and socioeconomic challenges that loom over arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid zones, Desertification. Through a figurative illustration "Greening and browning: Desertification challenges" we want to highlight the role of human activities in accelerating the processes of land degradation in these very fragile areas, which occupy more than 6,100 million hectares. This degradation involves the alteration of both the structure and the biological composition of ecosystems, which leads to a deterioration in their functions and, consequently, in the environmental goods and services they provide us.
