Description and Characteristics

The Doctoral Programme in Chemical, Environmental and Process Engineering aims to train doctors in the field of Chemical Engineering in general and Environmental Engineering specialization in particular. This programme is run by the Chemical Engineering Department of the School of Engineering of University of Valencia.

This programme is linked to a pre-existing one: Official Postgraduate Programme in Chemical, Environmental and Process Engineering (RD 56 /2005) of the University of Valencia. The doctoral studies will grant, as a minimum, the acquisition by the doctoral student of the basic competencies listed in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (MECES), namely: systematic understanding of a field of study of engineering, and mastery of its skills and methods of research; ability to conceive, design or create, implement and adapt a substantial process of research and creation; ability to make a critic analysis, an assessment, an synthesis of new and complex ideas, as well as communication with the academic and scientific community and society in general about their fields of knowledge; and ability to promote, within academic and professional contexts, scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural advancement in a knowledge-based society.

The interest and academic, scientific or professional relevance of the Doctoral Programme in Chemical, Environmental and Process Engineering is illustrated by the following considerations:

  • Past experiences: This proposal involves the transformation of the Official Postgraduate Programme in Chemical, Environmental and Process Engineering of the Department of Chemical Engineering (RD 56 /2005), currently in force at the University of Valencia. This programme got the Award for Excellence for the academic years 2012-2013, 2013-2014 and 2014-2015.
  • The Programme’s weighted overall grade obtained in the Assessment of the application was 93 out of 100. The official Doctoral Studies in Chemical, Environmental and Process Engineering comes from the adaptation of the Doctoral Programme "245 B Chemical Engineering” of the Department of Chemical Engineering, doctoral studies related to the qualifications architecture prior to Bologna reform (RD 778/1998).

The recommended profiles of the students of the programme are showed hereunder:

The ideal profile

Students who have a master’s degree in Chemical, Industrial, Environmental, Agronomical and Civil Engineering, Biotechnology or similar studies. In the case of having a Diploma of Advanced Studies in accordance with RD 778/98 or having reached the Researching Proficiency in accordance with RD 185/85, they must have been studied in doctoral programmes related to Chemical Engineering.

Examples of master’s degrees that fulfil the requirements of the programme:

- Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering of the Universitat de València

- Joint Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering of the Universitat de València and the Universidad Politécnica de València

Other profiles:

For other Student applicant profiles (master’s degree in Chemical, Environmental and Earth Sciences) certain specific academic complements related to master’s studies are required. Students will be able to conduct the academic complements while they are doing the doctoral programme. The academic complements (18 ECTS) are two subjects of the Joint Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering of the Universitat de València and the Universidad Politécnica de València:

  1. Environmental Quality Evaluation (9 ECTS)
  2. Transport of Pollutants in the Natural Environment (9 ECTS)
