In accordance with Royal Decree 99/2011, that regulates official teaching of Doctorates, the title of Doctor will include on its obverse the diligence ‘’Thesis under a joint supervision with the University U (University with which it cotutela)’’ whenever the following circumstances:

  • The doctoral thesis is supervised by two or more doctors from two universities, one Spanish and one foreign, which will formalize an agreement for joint supervision.
  • During the training period required for obtaining the doctorate, the doctoral Student has completed a minimum six-month stay in the institution with which the agreement cotutela establishing, conducting research, either in a single period or various. Stays and activities will be reflected in the joint supervision agreement.

In order to begin the procedures for the signing of the cotutela agreement of a doctoral student with another university, it is important to meet the following administrative requirements:

  • That the doctoral student is admitted to a doctoral programme at the Universitat de València and ant the university with which the agreement will be signed.
  • The application for joint supervision agreement must be submitted to the Doctoral School, duly signed by the person applying and those responsible for the thesis to the Universitat de València (tutor, director and academic coordinator of the doctoral programme).


The Universitat de València, in cooperation with the doctoral student, will negotiate with the other university the drafting of the text of the agreement, in which it will have to be specified, among others:

  • The co-supervisors of the thesis.
  • The terms the student must spend in each university, bearing in mind that the minimum stay at the Universitat de València is 9 months and the minimum stay at the other university 6 months.
  • The university where the thesis public defend will take place: regardless of the place where the defence act is carried out, the deposit must be made at both universities.
  • The languages that will be used in the writing of the thesis and its defence.
  • The university where the tuition fees will be paid, each of the academic courses: although the doctoral student will be enrolled during the whole period in both universities, the fees alone will be paid in one university; specifically, each academic year will be paid in the university in which the doctoral student makes a longer stay.
  • Both universities agree to deliver the doctoral degree, based on an only defend of the thesis, to the doctoral student with the previous payment of the issuance fees.
