In this seminar there will be a brief synthesis of the origin and historical development of telephone switching, from manual exchanges to the current digital switching exchanges. The importance of preserving the memory of works that have already disappeared will be highlighted, such as the mechanics and operators of electromechanical switching exchanges, as well as the historical and technological heritage associated to this technology. It will show some videos of the operation of exchanges already disassembled and also original digitized information of each one of the periods that marked the historical evolution of telephone switching.
Pablo Soler Ferrán (1963) is graduate in Physical Sciences and doctor in Philosophy from the Complutense University of Madrid. He conducted his doctoral thesis about the history of relativity in Spain. Independent researcher in the field of the history of science and technology, he has worked on the history of physics in Spain, the history of telecommunications and the historical and technological heritage, with several publications in specialized journals and in conference proceedings. He has recently published the book Inicio de la ciencia nuclear en España (Spanish nuclear society). He is administrator of the blog “Historias de la telefonía en España” and collaborator of the Historical Forum of Telecommunications. He has developed his professional career for 30 years in the telecommunications sector, specifically in the design of radio antennas, engineer of digital switching telephone exchanges, operation and maintenance of intelligent networks, management of IP networks, as well as process management and quality assurance. He has also been trainee lecturer of the International University of la Rioja supervising Master’s Degrees Final Project Undergraduate.
