This Wednesday, March 2nd, Health and Safety and the Environment Service of the Universitat de València successfully completed the first emergency drill, held in the Building 4 of the buisness area of the Science Park in Burjassot-Paterna Campus.

The event was carried out with the collaboration and participation of the Valencia’s Provincial Fire Service Consortium, particularly with the provision of the Burjassot and Paterna Fire Stations.

The building houses the Institute for Integrative Systems Biology I2SysBio (UV-CSIC) and different areas of the Image Processing Laboratory (ERI of the UV).

The building 4 is a parf of the Science Park of the Universitat and is located in the buisness area.

In this case, an electrical fire was simulated in the dressing room on the first floor of the centre, generating a large amount of smoke that made it difficult to control and limited visibility on the floor. The accumulated plume of smoke prevented passage through and blocked access to one of the plant's emergency exits. The emergency team on the floor and the centre's emergency response team tried to control the fire by using the nearest fire extinguisher and fire hydrant.

An injured and unconscious person was also rescued after falling from a stepladder in a chemical warehouse located near the fire. As a result of the amount of smoke generated, the plant's emergency personnel were unable to assist in the evacuation of the injured person and he was confined until later rescued by the fire brigade.

Due to the scale of the emergency, the building's emergency protocol was activated, which included the mobilisation of all the centre's emergency team, total evacuation of the building and a call to 112.

The drill is part of the process of Implemention of the centre's self-protection plan, a process that has also included the prior designation of the building's emergency team, their theoretical and practical training, as well as the review of the means of protection available, access to the centre, definition of reception points for external help and the installation of evacuation signs or You are here signs in the building. The carrying out of this type of exercise aims to disseminate and improve the integration of the preventive culture.
