Do you want to get to know the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences? What degrees do we offer?
The Universitat de València organises the “Conèixer la Universitat” programme with the aim of bringing the Universitat closer to high schools and showing future students its educational offer and services.
“Conèixer la Universitat” is an initiative of the Office of the Vice-Principal for Studies that is coordinated by the Information and Promotion Service (Sedi) and has the participation of the centres and services of the Universitat de València.
The Degree in Mathematics intends to teach students to recognise the presence of mathematics in various areas of our environment: nature, science, technology, business processes, art, etc., and provide them with the necessary tools to apply their knowledge to them. As a result, professionals are trained to contribute with other disciplines such as engineering, biological and health sciences, economics, social sciences, etc.
Graduates in Mathematics apply their knowledge in a wide range of areas, such as teaching, research and business, or in activities related to computer science, telecommunications, finance and consultancy, among others.
Much of the technology surrounding us every day is governed by principles of physics and/or mathematical algorithms (from medical diagnosis techniques to GPS or energy production systems, cryptography, image processing, statistical analysis, etc. This double degree offers training focused on physical phenomena, the models and laws explaining them, as well as on mathematical language, the abstraction and formalisation of the deductive process, the experimental method, sophisticated instrumentation and computational methods. These studies train versatile professionals with the ability to solve multidisciplinary problems in the scientific and technological fields.
This double degree develops analytical skills, abstraction and critical sense, from an approach which combines mathematical methods and rigour with intuition for modelling and solving physics problems. This training provides greater employability and adaptation in very diverse and cutting-edge sectors. Among others: basic and applied research in high-tech industrial sectors and research centres (photonics, optoelectronics, environment, alternative energies, particles and fundamental interactions, astrophysics, aerospace industry, telecommunications, new materials); financial and insurance institutions (market research and risk analysis); scientific/technical and IT consultancy firms (process optimisation, communication networks, numerical methods, coding, cryptography); healthcare (medical physics); statistical companies and institutes; meteorological and geophysical services; science teaching and communication.

In an increasingly digital world, there is a growing demand for people with a complete mathematical background who also have the engineering methodology to contribute to the development and use of information and communication technologies.
The double degree programme in Mathematics and Computer Engineering provides a comprehensive training that combines these two aspects and also provides the necessary skills and abilities to understand and exploit the interrelationships between mathematics and computer engineering.
The training acquired by graduates in Mathematics and Computer Engineering provides a job profile with a wide capacity for employment and adaptation in very diverse and cutting-edge sectors, both related to computing and ICT in general and to the financial sector, scientific research, teaching or data analysis and statistics.

Mathematics is a basic science, present in other sciences and in general in most of the knowledge branches. Its development is closely linked to the progress of human knowledge ever since ancient times and it is impossible to imagine the current world without the presence of Mathematics.
On one hand, in the last years have arisen new applications in fields so diverse such as Genetics, Biotechnology, Cryptography, Information Technologies and Communication, Finances, etc. In this sense, we can find today mathematicians in jobs that require advanced specialised knowledge in Mathematics that are not obtained in the Degree. These go beyond the possibilities of the Master’s Degree. The access to the official postgraduate studies can be carried out from different training profiles.
Those students that confirm holding a Licenciatura in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Sciences or a degree in Engineering, will access the Master’s Degree directly, as well as those students holding a degree as part of the new study plan that substitutes the aforementioned degrees.
For those students holding a degree which does not correspond with the above mentioned, the Master’s academic committee will require the necessary information of the student on his/her knowledge and will carry out a proposal on his/her conditions of admission, establishing in the corresponding case, a tutorship that is academically suitable.
Students will be selected according to academic excellence criteria in which the academic record will be fundamentally valued. We will also take into account, if they are any, the student exchange agreements between the universities responsible of the master's degree and the universities issuer of the possible admission applicants.
The specific criteria that will count toward, if demand exceeds supply, are the following:
- The academic record in the undergraduate degrees or equivalents previous studies to the master's degree (70%)
- Assessment of the letter of interest and motivations submitted by the student and its resemblance with the profile recommended for coursing this master's degree (20%)
- Other merits (10%)
If the Commission deems it appropriate, personal interviews will be made. Those students rejected will be able to request the revision of their academic record in the coordinator university, following the rules of administrative law. Due to the international character that is intended, our own web and the webpages of the students service and of the Office of European Convergence will be used for the diffusion of admission criteria, admitted students and final result of the revision on the complaints.
The Master’s Degree in Biostatistics has the goal to adapt the academic offer to the professional trends of the labour market regarding research in Epidemiology, Clinical and Pharmaceutical Research, and in Environmental and Natural Systems Research, regarding the gathering of professionals trained for the treatment and analysis of the available information in the research experiments carried out in any Biostatistics branch. The purpose of the degree is not only to produce experts in diverse statistical analysis techniques and procedures, but to train statistical professionals, experienced in information analysis.
The Master’s Degree in Biostatistics is set out as a natural continuation of professional specialization and training of researchers in three very specific areas which are Epidemiology, clinical and pharmaceutical research and Environmental research. In these three areas, the special supply of epidemiologists, clinical analysts and environmental researchers came from specific degrees related to Biology, Medicine, Pharmacy and Environmental Sciences respectively. However, in the face of the vertiginous rhythm of research in all of them, the need for experts that not only have the knowledge and skills typical of what the degrees provide, but that receive training complements related to Statistical Modelling and advanced forecasting techniques has been increasing. These knowledge and skills are essential to guarantee a rigorous and acceptable planning of their experiments and researches, as well as a profitable treatment of the obtained information. The proper previous training are provided by the Licenciaturas/Undergraduate studies of the area of Health and Life Sciences (Medicine, Biology, Pharmacy, Environment, Agricultural Engineering, etc.), and by the Licenciatura/Ingeniería Superior/Undergraduate studies in any of the areas of Basic Sciences and Techniques. Those holding a degree in any other areas that have professional experience in the area of this Master’s Degree will also provide a proper profile.
Admission to the Master’s Degree is carried out in a personal fashion, taking care of training and previous experience of the applicant in relation with the contents of the different subjects of the Master’s, as well as his/her academic record.
• 50%: academic record.
