UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA, A REDIRIS AFFILIATED INSTITUTION, MULTIPLIES THE SPEED OF ITS OPTICAL NETWORK BY 10 UNTIL IT REACHES 100 Gbps

The action is part of the University's commitment to offer the university community the most advanced communications technology for a better performance of teaching, research and electronic administration.

This new connectivity will make it possible to offer a better quality of experience in services that use a high network consumption (HD videoconferencing, Cloud services, video playback,...) and advance access to innovative services promoted by the European institutions with funds specific for IT projects in fields such as: Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning , Internet of Things (I0T), Big Data , Blockchain , Open Data , 5G,... All this means opening the spectrum of possible solutions to situations included in the 2030 Agenda, which require this type of technological development for their execution. There are innumerable areas that today require increasingly effective connectivity, from advances in health solutions, such as the improvement of educational tools, in the development of research and innovation, in the improvement of administrative management processes , accessibility to information, etc.

The action has been carried out by the Office of the Vice President for Planning, Quality and Information Technology and by the Servei d'Informàtica and has meant multiplying by 10 the previous capacity, thanks to the fiber optic capacity that the University has deployed among its campus, as well as the availability of the National Fiber Optic Network, managed by RedIRIS, with a total investment of €606,834.

Our end-to-end link over the RedIRIS fiber optic network in its Nova 100 RedIRIS project, is one of the few deployed among Spanish universities. This equipment, which as its first advantage offers a significant increase in the speed of communications, provides other advantages such as:

  • Security improvements.
  • Simplification in management, by reducing the number of devices in internal links.
  • Possibility of supporting more access points to the network.
  • Improvement in the stability of the wired and wireless network.
  • Simpler configurations, which minimize the possibility of error or failure at critical points in the network.
  • Space savings in communications racks, occupying between 5 and 7 times less space per node.
  • An increase in processing capacity of up to 2 billion packets per node.
  • Increase in global processing capacity of up to 6.4 Tbps per node.
  • One of the objectives of the Red IRIS NOVA 2 project is to expand digital connectivity for better teaching and research. Regarding SDG 9 ( Industry, innovation and infrastructure), this project allows progress in the achievement of target 9.1: "Develop reliable, sustainable, resilient and quality infrastructure, including regional and cross-border infrastructure, to support economic development and well-being with a special emphasis on affordable and equitable access for all”. And, furthermore, to do so in coherence with goal 7.3: "By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency", since the performance of this equipment allows a reduction in electricity consumption by 68% per node.
