On October 3, the Faculty of Law at the University of Valencia will host the conference “Imagining in Times of Collapse: Ecosocial Crisis and Community Horizons”, organized by Marina Galán and Sara Sánchez, recipients of the Activa Cultura and coordinators of the cultural project Ventanas Abiertas.
The event proposes a space for reflection and creation around one of today’s greatest challenges: the ecosocial crisis. In a context marked by eco-anxiety, dystopias, and the feeling of inhabiting increasingly unlivable worlds, the conference invites us to recover the ability to imagine sustainable, community-based, and life-centered futures.
The morning program will feature two philosophical-theoretical dialogues. The first, with professor Carmen Madorrán (UAM) and researcher Alberto Coronel (UCM), will address the ecological crisis as an ethical and political challenge. The second will include Nuria Sánchez León (UV) and Gala Arias Rubio (UAM), who will explore the role of the humanities and the arts in shaping new ecosocial imaginaries.
In the afternoon, the event will shift towards creative practice through two workshops. The first will focus on the book Estío. Eleven Climate Fiction Stories (2018), using ecofiction as a lens to reflect on the climate crisis. The second, led by poet and essayist Luci Romero, will offer creative writing exercises exploring the relationship between nature, identity, and literature.
The conference seeks to build bridges between critical thinking, artistic creation, and community action, offering a space for dialogue where philosophy, literature, and art become tools to imagine other possible worlds.
