Background

The initial proposal of the study plan of the Master's Degree in Public Health and Healthcare Management (MDPHHM) was carried out from the master's degree of the University of Valencia named "Master's Degree in Public Health and Healthcare Management", taught during eight editions (the first edition being during the 1998-1999 year).

In turn, this master's degree had as precedent the "Títol de Mestratge en Salut Comunitària" (Master's Degree in Community Health) that was taught since 1985 in collaboration with the then Conselleria de Sanitat, Treball i Seguretat Social (Valencian Department of Healthcare, Labour and Social Security), through the Institut Valencia d’Estudis en Salut Pública (IVESP).

Finally, in the 2010-2011 year, the request for the master's degree was approved in meeting of the Department Council, with the participation of the teaching staff, students and the PAS. The departments that brought this matter to the Department Council were those of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Food Sciences, Toxicology and Legal Medicine, and the department of Nursing.

The dean teams of the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy, given the affinity of the degrees that they teach with the studies of the MDPHHM, expressed their agreement with the proposal. The Committee Producing the Study Plan (CEPE) with the participation of the PDI, students and PAS of the involved departments. The proposal was approved in the meeting of the Governing Council of the University of Valencia on 28 July 2011.

The Assessment of the Request of Verification of the Official Study Plan received a POSITIVE assessment report coming from the National Quality Assessement Agency (ANECA) on 26 April 2012, considering that the proposal of master's degree meets the assessment requirements according to what the Royal Decree 1393/2007 modified by the Royal Decree 861/2010 establishes.

The positive verification resolution of the study plan belonging to the master's degree that was issued by the General Director of University Policy of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports on 1 June 2012.

Given the interest showed by the Valencian healthcare institutions in the training in public health, it has been considered, from the very start, the needs and contributions that may turn the proposal into a training one. The interest of the MDPHHM for the healthcare institutions of the Valencian Community became evident through the agreement signed between the Valencian Department of Health and the University of Valencia to teach the MDPHHM. The objective of said agreement, signed in 2008, and managed through the Escuela Valenciana de Estudios para la Salud (EVES), was to provide professionals that wish to develop his/her labour in public health and healthcare management with the current knowledge, skills and practices that this field requires, in a multidisciplinary context and where the capacity of adaptation to face challenges is essential.

Within the Valencian Department of Health, the General Directorate for Public Health (DGSP) has explicitly its interest and support to this Master's degree, and has participated in the following editions of the degree providing professionals that have taken part as teaching staff.

The Center for Public Health Research (FISABO-CSISP), opened in 2008, has also contributed their proposals and expressed their supprot to the MDPHHM.

Several scientific societies of the area of public health that have been consulted, have expressed their support to the MDPHHM and their interest in its development. Among these societies you can find:

  • Spanish Society for Public Health and Healthcare Administration (SESPAS)
  • Spanish Society for Epidemiology (SEE)
  • Spanish Society for Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Hygiene (SEMPSPH)

The training programme of the Biomedical Research Networking Centres (CIBER) and in Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP) have also expressed their support to the proposal of MDPHHM of the University of Valencia. The National School of Health, assigned to the Institute of Health Carlos III have also shown their support to this proposal of master's degree.
