A multidisciplinary research team from the University of Valencia led by Ana Polache and Lucía Hipólito (Faculty of Pharmacy), and Miguel Ángel Serrano (Faculty of Psychology) analyses in the project “Risk decisions in alcohol consumption after the COVID-19: the role of anxiety depending on gender and age”, how loneliness, stress and emotional states can influence decision-making, as well as the ways in which alcohol consumption intervenes in these factors. The team asks for the public’s collaboration through the survey https://encuestas.uv.es/index.php/127956?lang=es.
The project is carried out with the participation of the European Funds for Resilience and Recovery Mechanisms, as well as with the participation of the Government Delegation of the National Plan on Drugs of the Ministry of Health. Knowing the interrelationship of these mechanisms will contribute to the design of preventive and therapeutic actions and will take into account the specific characteristics of each individual. This research will also carry out a detailed study of the effects depending on sex/gender, as well as the age of the people.
The multidisciplinary team proposes to carry out parallel studies in humans and in rodent models, to better understand the neurobiological processes underlying the interactions of these factors. This knowledge will constitute an advance in the field of addictions, but also in other mental illnesses as prevalent in society as anxiety or stress.
“We believe that it is crucial to obtain data on the population that consumes and those that do not, in order to be able to understand well which neurobiological processes are altered. That is why we call all people to participate in the study. We know that it is a 15-minute effort, but it can be beneficial for the whole society”, comment the researchers of this project.
