Five research institutions, including the University of Valencia, have organised a new session of ‘Ciènca i Canyes’ (Science and Beers) on Tuesday 7th May, at 7:30 PM at the Fábrica de Hielo in Valencia. This event aims to disseminate scientific knowledge through brief talks by specialists from various areas to bring knowledge closer to the public in an entertaining way. The event will be simultaneously translated into sign language by two interpreters from FESORD and admission will be free until full capacity is reached.

The event is also organised by the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community (Fisabio), the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), the delegation of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in the Valencian Community, and the INCLIVA Health Research Institute. It has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology-Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

Héctor Muelas, researcher at Fisabio (an entity of the Valencian Health Department), will explain the European project SchoolFood4Change. This initiative, which has the participation of the Directorate General of Public Health and Fisabio, aims to redefine the approach to food in educational environments and transform European school canteens into epicentres of sustainability and healthy eating.

Lucia Hipólito, researcher at the University Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine of the University of Valencia, will decipher the mysteries of fentanyl and explain the risks and solutions to its inappropriate use, which can lead to addictive behaviours. The researcher will also address the overdose crisis of this substance in the United States and how knowledge of the subject can help prevent these significant health problems in society.

María Tamayo, a postdoctoral researcher at the Microbiota, Nutrition and Health group at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC), will also participate on behalf of the Valencian CSIC delegation. The researcher will focus on the study of the bacteria that inhabit the intestine (intestinal microbiota) and their relationship with diet, health and diseases. She will also explain what probiotics are and how they are developed in her laboratory, using a specific example.

Additionally, Miguel López, a researcher at the Human-TECH Institute of the UPV, will talk to the audience about the importance of processing medical images for cancer detection using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, taking advantage of the data provided by non-experts in the field through citizen science.

The ‘Science and Beers’ session will have the collaboration of FESORD (Federation of Deaf People of the Valencian Community).
