Multimedia and computer engineers from the University of Valencia (UV) are promoting the 9ART project, which invites people to participate in the creation of a digital artwork whose market value will result from the interaction between individuals and artificial intelligence algorithms. This is the ninth artistic proposal of the Falla Immaterial collective, which will be presented today, Thursday 20, at 12.30 p.m. at Galería Cuatro, with a second session at 7.00 p.m.
The final work can be seen and printed at Galería Cuatro (Carrer La Nau, 25, Valencia) until 20 March, changing every 15 seconds to showcase all creations. Through the 9ART website, anyone can create their own artwork, view its market price and print it. Renowned artists and the general public will participate in this collective piece.
The Falla Immaterial collective is composed of Francisco Grimaldo Moreno, Elena Álvarez García, Daniel García Costa, Emilia López Iñesta and Alejandro Casasús Rubio —researchers from the institution — who are collaborating in the project alongside Valencia City Council, the UV and Galería Cuatro.
9ART is a multimedia and interactive installation that encourages reflection on what humans value both individually and collectively in society, through an interactive artistic creation. A dynamic, evolving polychrome grid displayed on a digital screen will connect participants' contributions in a network of chromatic modules. "In other words, all the artworks created by participants will appear on the screen in a grid format, forming a new collective piece", explains Francisco Grimaldo.
"To participate, a person enters the website, inputs their name, surname and signature and, at that moment, the algorithms generate the artwork and assign it a market price. If they do this from the gallery, they can print it and take their artwork home as a souvenir. Furthermore, their piece will be displayed on the gallery screen for 15 seconds, in allusion to the 15 minutes of fame coined by Andy Warhol", Grimaldo adds.
Until 20 March, anyone visiting the gallery or accessing the project via their computer or mobile phone can contribute to the creation of this digital artwork. They can do so by scanning the QR code available in the gallery or by visiting www.fallaimmaterial.com.
How It Works
9ART begins with a large-format blank digital canvas, which transforms through the input of each participant who provides their name and signature. A set of intelligent algorithms uses this information to generate an individual graphic representation, which is then assigned a market value based on its presence on social media. The installation then allows participants to print a copy of this virtual painting, which becomes a unique piece that questions this supposedly fictitious value.
The individual creations are combined into a collective polychrome composition made up of colour segments, gradually transforming the digital canvas into a visual synthesis of all co-authors. This acts as an iconic personification of the public, granting equal and unitary value to all contributors. Over time, the accumulation of these valuations throughout the exhibition’s duration assigns 9ART an ostensibly real market value.
