Between March and June 2026, Tiago Gomes will carry out a research stay at the IILP-UV. He studied a bachelor's and master's degree in Chemistry at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa. He is currently a PhD student in the history of Science at the CIUHCT-Universidade de Lisboa and at the IILP-Universitat de València, which he is doing thanks to a postdoctoral fellowship from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (BD.04469.2025) of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and is also part of the Exchange zones research project. His lines of work are: History of science in Portugal in the twentieth century; Agrarian Sciences and Politics in Portugal in the Twentieth Century; History of Chemistry; Chemical sites and scientific spaces in the Iberian Peninsula.

Summary of Tiago's research project

The Junta Nacional do Azeite (JNA) was an institution that oversaw the olive and olive oil sector in Portugal during the 20th century. It was created by the Estado Novo and operated between 1937 and 1972, constituting itself as an entity that sought the reform and modernization of the sector, with the aim of complying with the ideological principles and agricultural policies of the regime as well as an important space for co-construction between science in Portugal, in that period, and the regime that supported it. The main objective of the stays at the IILP-UV will be to understand the Spanish case with regard to the structuring of the olive and olive oil sector in that country. This line is based on initial indications present in the JNA bulletins, which point to contacts—albeit occasional—between specialists from both countries, as well as to the interaction between the institutions that supervised the sector (in the case of Spain, the National Olive Growing Board). Thus, and within a planned format of three stays over three years, facilitated by the Bolsa de Doutoramento em Linha Académica, in a mixed regime, of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (BD.04469.2025), these objectives will be sought to be met through the exploration of the Institute's collections, the Historicomedical Library and other areas of interest in Spain.
