Members of the ODServa project will visit the University of Jaén next Wednesday, September 23rd, to present this innovative virtual reality (VR) experience to the students. This will enable them to explore, in an immersive way, the global challenges set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to contribute to social, economic and environmental development.
Among the workshops offered by the initiative is included “The Enigma of Water”, which focuses on SDG 6 on water and sanitation. In this workshop, students must identify what has gone wrong with the water sanitation system at different points along a river. To do this, they will have to investigate potential sources of pollution and answer the question cards about the types of discharges.
The activity “The Hidden Legacy of Women” is linked to SDG 5, which focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and young girls. Through a series of cards and clues placed along a winding map, each landmark is matched with the corresponding woman to highlight historical and contemporary female role models.
These are some of the virtual reality scenarios linked to the 17 SDGs in which players are immersed in ODServa to illustrate how the Sustainable Development Goals can be applied in everyday life. Other mini-games present situations such as removing sexist slogans from a wall and repairing cracks in a dam to prevent water wastage.
The current version of ODServa is operational from this year until April 2027 and is funded by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda.
The University of Valencia is coordinating the project through the ARTEC group, whilst the University of La Laguna is contributing its expertise through workshops on sustainability and the SDGs, and is leading the regional roll-out in the Canary Islands. The Spanish Volunteering Platform and the organizations ONCE, CERMI and CNSE are collaborating on the project alongside vocational training centers and secondary schools.
