We live in a society in which it is becoming increasingly difficult to combine work and family life. As a result, the elderly, in most cases, assume the responsibility of accompanying children on their daily commute to school or the school bus stop.

Despite the everyday nature of this situation, the special vulnerability of both groups, coupled with the inevitable exposure to various risks arising from interaction with traffic and crowds in the vicinity of schools and public transport stops, amplify the concern for their safety.

In this scenario, children are particularly vulnerable due to their low risk perception. For their part, the elderly have to face a series of physical limitations inherent to old age that limit their freedom of movement, forcing them to avoid the crowds that usually occur in these critical areas. Both situations, together, usually result in an inadequate occupation of the road, which increases the chances of being run over, especially in situations of heavy traffic typical of rush hour. Therefore, the proper management and planning of these trips becomes a social necessity.

The project "Optimized and Safe Design of School Transport Routes for Older People (TWO BY THREE)" aims to improve the safety of children and their older companions.

To undertake this work, guidelines based on objective data from the current transport network (number of stops, stop characteristics, busiest times, frequency of school transport vehicles, etc.) are initially required, so that routes can be designed to improve the safety of both school-age children and their older companions.

This project is funded on the basis of the APOTI call (aid for the hiring of support staff) of the Department of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society of the Generalitat Valenciana (CIAPOT/2023/010).
