Description

The ESCOLA project (Safe Environments Accident Free Schools) is a research project that seeks to address the problem of road safety in school environments. These environments are particularly sensitive due to the high probability of the occurrence of real risk situations that cause accidents for children attending or leaving school, as well as for those accompanying them and other road users in these environments. Among the risk situations are the transport of children in motorized vehicles, which can give rise to different scenarios such as the accumulation of improperly parked vehicles on the sidewalk that reduce visibility to other road users, poor design of urban roads or situations generated by the growing use of bicycles and personal mobility vehicles (PMV) that are increasingly widespread for transporting children to or from school, among other factors.

The main objective of the ESCOLA project is to study in depth the causes, circumstances and factors that affect the increase in the probability of more traffic accidents occurring in school environments, and to propose solutions that act directly on the lack of knowledge or awareness on the part of the different groups in the school environment about the existing risk situations. The project also has as a specific objective the study of the causes and factors that are directly associated with the group of drivers who circulate in school environments without accessing schools.

To achieve these objectives, the ESCOLA project evaluates different technological solutions focused on the improvement of the Human Factor that contribute to the mitigation of the problem posed and achieve an increase in the awareness of all groups in the school environment about the existing risk situations. The conclusions drawn from this research will allow a better understanding of the causes, circumstances and factors, as well as other incident variables, involved in the problem, facilitating the adoption of measures that act directly on it, in order to contribute to its reduction.

From the point of view of research activity, the development of this project will promote knowledge in the field of road safety in school environments, which is considered especially relevant given the impact of the subject in our society.

In summary, the ESCOLA project seeks to address the problem of road safety in school environments through the investigation of the causes, circumstances and factors that affect it and the proposal of technological solutions that contribute to the mitigation of the problem and the awareness of all groups in the school environment about the existing risk situations. The project aims to contribute to the reduction of the probability of traffic accidents occurring in school environments and to promote knowledge in the field of road safety in school environments.

This project is funded on the basis of the AICO call (Subsidies for consolidated research groups) of the Department of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society of the Generalitat Valenciana (CIAICO/2021/175).
