This adaptation, based on a set of 126 items from different versions and adaptations of European and international studies, has been developed taking into account that it was based on markedly different populations in terms of demographic and sociocultural characteristics.
The Spanish version of the DBQ consists of 75 items of “unsafe behaviours” related to: Lapses (forgetfulness or concentration fails), Mistakes (mistakes in the driver’s expected way of acting who tried to do something but that “has not gone well”), Regulation’s infringement (intentional deviations of what safe driving means), Infringements with an aggressive component (they add to the aforementioned intentional factor an interpersonal aggressive component or of some exhibitionism).
In its development, unusual contents within the context of the driving world in Spain (as for example the ones related to driving in extreme weather conditions) have been deleted and some items have been modified according to the traffic regulations. The response scale goes from 1 (this behaviour never happens) to 6 (high frequency of this behaviour), considering the value 0 for the cases in which drivers have never been in such a situation.
Within the project, an application of the DBQ to a sample of drivers has been done to validate the Spanish adaptation of the DBQ. In order to do so, a pilot study that was applied to a small sample of drivers was designed. The sources of the sample were RACC partner with over 2 years old and it consisted of a stratified sampling from the variables of age, gender and Autonomous region.
With the Spanish adaptation of the Driving Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ), RACC and INTRAS have developed a new method for the analysis of Spanish drivers’ behaviours.
Furthermore, the Spanish adaptation of this international questionnaire will also allow a survey led by Fundación RACC (RACC Foundation) to 4’500 people in order to know the risk Level of Spanish Drivers. Once the risk parameters of Spanish drivers resulting from this under development macro-survey were established, the so called Unsafe Behaviours Test will be available through the Internet, so any network user who wish to take it could make a self-assessment at the time of driving.
