Place: C/ Tossal, 8 - 46701 GANDIA

Description:

The purpose of the PHOTOGRAPHY, MEMORY AND HERITAGE course is to bring the public closer to photographic methods of image production as a means of preserving memory and tangible and intangible heritage. In addition, the interventions of renowned specialists will allow us to understand how the processes of heritage of photography work, understood as a historical, social and anthropological document, and as an expressive tool. From this point of view, attention will be paid to the techniques of conservation of photography, possibly one of the first questions that an institution or individual will ask when trying to constitute a collection or photographic archive of memory. Also, based on the analysis of particular cases, experiences of cataloguing, digitization and management of photographic archives by some institutions will be presented. Finally, the possible uses and challenges of photography and the photographic archive will be addressed. Images are now a powerful source of information for Natural, Social and Human Sciences. But its use is not just an educational and research tool. Historical photography and archiving can be a place where the artist finds inspiration or where people become aware of their belonging to a community. Within photography, one of the genres to which special attention will be paid during the course will be amateur or family photography. Some photographic archives have been created precisely because of an awareness of the importance of these photographs. Reflection on amateur photography and the family album - its actual and potential uses - will allow us to delve deeper into the consequences of heritage. It also inspires projects at the municipal level to gather and manage a photographic heritage that brings together local memory. If these traces of the past are not acted upon quickly and efficiently, they may end up dispersing or disappearing forever.
