The italian city of Pompeii is known as the Archaeology capital of the world. Next Wednesday, 16th October, the general director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, will give a conference at La Nau Cultural Centre of the Universitat de València, at 18 p.m., in which he will talk about the new discoveries and research in what is the Mecca of Archaeology. The lecture, which is free of charge until full capacity is reached in the Aula Magna, will be given in Italian with simultaneous translation.

The event will be presented by the Vice-Principal for Culture and Society of the UV, Ester Alba and the Valencian researcher, Llorenç Alapont, director of the project ‘Investigating the archaeology of death in Pompeii’ and of the university micro-credential ‘New techniques for the recovery and interpretation of funerary archaeological heritage’

Since the excavations began in 1748, Pompeii has always been something of an Archaeology capital. In the city destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 BC, it usually surprises with finds, such as the one that yielded the tomb of Marcus VeneriusZuchtriegel's first major discovery as director of Pompeii since he took up his post in 2021. The discovery, made by a team of archaeologists from the Universitat de València led by Llorenç Alapont, went around the world and became one of the most important revelations in Pompeii in recent years. A glass urn containing possibly the oldest wine in the world, more than 2,000 years old, was found in this tomb, which is currently being analysed by an interdisciplinary team from the Universitat de València. The vessel is dated to before the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79.

The conference organised by the Escola Europea de Pensament Lluis Vives of the UV, a cultural project promoted by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Society, which is a space for reflection on current affairs, will focus on the state of research into the wine found in Pompeii, as well as other findings and discoveries in course. The Escola has the participation of other actors from the public administration and civil society and the collaboration of Caixa Popular.
