New open-access book on the potential of video in language teaching, linked to the VIDECOM project

The research project VIDECOM highlights the publication of the book Video for Language Teaching. A Perspective from the Valencian Context(2026), coordinated by Aina Monferrer-Palmer and Alícia Martí-Climent, published by Octaedro and available in open access.

Video has become a key element in teaching and learning languages within an increasingly multimodal digital ecosystem. In this context, the book offers a rigorous, up-to-date and situated perspective on its use, drawing on experience in Catalan language didactics in the Valencian context.

The volume is organised into three main parts that combine theoretical foundations and applied analysis. In the first, drawing on the framework of sociodiscursive interactionism and plurilingual education, Monferrer-Palmer and Martí-Climent analyse video as a multimodal text genre that promotes metalinguistic reflection and language production in multiple formats—oral, written and multimodal alike. This perspective highlights its value not only in didactic resources designed by teachers, but also in autonomous learning processes.

The second part presents various studies on the creation and use of videos in different educational settings, including initial teacher training, language teaching with adult learners, and interlinguistic comparison approaches that draw on transfer between school and family languages. This diversity of contexts demonstrates the versatility of video as a didactic tool and as a resource for strengthening communicative strategies in plurilingual environments.

The third part of the book focuses on a case study of the video tutorials on the public platform Apunts de Llengua, analysing the actual uses made of them by practising language teachers. This analysis makes it possible to identify both the potential and the limitations of these materials, and to propose lines of improvement for the future development of didactic and outreach audiovisual resources.

This book was developed within the framework of two research projects linked to research in language didactics. On the one hand, the VIDECOM project. The use of video in plurilingual contexts to improve professional teaching competence. Research on the development of communicative strategies in the linguistic and didactic training of future teachers (Generalitat Valenciana, CIGE/2024/119; PI: Alícia Martí-Climent), which focuses its research on the role of video in developing professional teaching competence in plurilingual contexts. On the other, the VIAEL project. Videotutorials and Artificial Intelligence for Language Teaching: Designing and Validating Didactic Tools from a Sociodiscursive Interactionist Perspective (Universitat de València, Special Action 2025; Ref. INV25-01-23; PI: Aina Monferrer-Palmer), aimed at the design and validation of didactic tools based on video tutorials and artificial intelligence.

In this regard, the publication contributes to transferring to the educational and research community the results and reflections arising from the research. The work thus becomes a valuable tool for both research and teaching practice, as it offers solid theoretical frameworks and applied guidance for integrating video into didactic resources that are contextualised and aligned with the current challenges of plurilingual education. With this publication, the VIDECOM project reinforces its commitment to educational research and to the open dissemination of knowledge, contributing to a rethinking of the role of video as a central tool in teachers' linguistic and didactic training.
