Our group has characterised a new important regulator of the Start transition: Whi7. Whi7 acts as a transcriptional repressor of the Start programme, collaborating with Whi5 in this function, so that, as occurs in mammals with the Rb family, the control of cell cycle initiation depends on the interplay between different repressors. The group's work aims to advance in the characterisation of the regulation and function of Whi7 and its comparison with Whi5 in different physiological conditions, which may help to understand how the action of different repressors is coordinated in the control of cell cycle initiation. In addition, the relationship between Whi7 and the protein kinase C pathway is being investigated. The fact that a member of the Rb family is mutated in almost all tumours further reinforces the importance of studying the role of these G1 repressors.

Children, adolescents and young people constitute the future of the new societies. Family relationships operate in unison with global changes: the family has lost the capacity to generate synergies on its own and needs guidance to overcome them. Family societies have lost the intensity they had in previous decades, due to the processes of individualisation and the loss of collective values. Therefore, it is a commitment of GESinn to analyse the socialisation processes of adolescents and the family networks of which they form part, to investigate their risks, to prevent difficulties and to promote and strengthen the mechanisms of social adjustment for the development of a positive life. The aim of the study is to investigate adolescence from different intervention perspectives: prevention, protection and re-education. The previous professional experience of the members of GESinn in the care of this group constitutes an added value to the empirical dimension.

The end-of-life care line began with the participation of Enric Benito and Pilar Barreto in agreements between the UV and the SECPAL (Spanish Society of Palliative Care) to jointly design a measure of spirituality in patients that was clinically, psychometrically and culturally relevant to measure the resources to deal with symptomatology beyond the physical at the end of life. After a decade of productive collaboration, research in this field (EPIONE study) progressed towards intervention (KIBO protocol). On the other hand, always with the emphasis on methodology, the proposal and validation of new measurement tools, research was extended to other relevant topics such as dignity or demoralisation syndrome in patients.
The efficiency of interventions on quality of life is designed and studied in patients and their environment as well as in professionals. In the case of professionals, research is carried out not only in the health field, whether in palliative care, intensive care or home care, but also in general in professional activities with high emotional demand, such as care for people with functional diversity, children with developmental disorders or police. There are several interventions based on Positive Psychology that show effectiveness in reducing stress in professionals with high emotional demand.
From ARMAQoL, with an emphasis on methodology and in collaboration with clinical experts from the UV, we investigate the use of different mechanisms and formats of these interventions, making them more appealing, and trying to reduce dropout rates. In professionals, the multicentre YASO study, in collaboration with the UIB (Noemí Sansó, member of the team) was our first incursion into the inner curriculum of palliative care professionals. Nowadays, this research, with a strong theoretical basis, has been consolidated as a diagnostic approach in health systems in numerous countries, in different languages.

It is based on the cultural and linguistic contrast, using corpus linguistics as a basis, between several modern majority languages such as Peninsular Spanish and English. The aim is to clarify concepts and look for practical applications both at a particular level between specific communicative communities and at a global level within the educational setting, as well as in social and professional communication, such as business communication. The tools of corpus linguistics, from a cross-cultural perspective, prove to be essential both for the collection of real data and compilation of corpora and for their analysis and application of results. In this team, the study of current social and professional communication is approached in symbiosis with the digital world, not only as a mediator, but also as a target for new generation applications.
The group also studies contrastive linguistics and its application to translation at a lexical-semantic and pragmatic-discursive level between majority languages, e.g. Peninsular Spanish and English, in specialised fields such as health sciencies as well as in other academic and professional contexts.

Biopsychosocial variables aimed at improving the quality of life in the life cycle. José Manuel Tomás' career in the field of his research line is well known. He has co-directed with Amparo Oliver competitive longitudinal projects in the field under the MICIN/AEI/FEDER Challenges call for proposals. Currently in 2021-2022, together with Laura Badenes, he is the Director of the Official Master's Degree in Social and Health Care in Dependency at the Universitat de València. The scientific and technical objectives focus on identifying the variables that most influence the quality of life of the elderly, how they relate to each other and how we can work on them according to theoretical reference models from different cultures. We research both in the field of so-called successful elderly (such as active and healthy people who attend educational programmes for older adults), as well as older people living in community or those who are institutionalised. The research with national and international impact of the team members in this line is reflected in impact journals and includes research collaborations in the field with researchers from our own university, or collaborations with universities such as UNCC Charlotte in the USA, Universidad Privada del Norte in Lima-Peru or the Universidad de Costa Rica.

This research line studies the effects of the psychophysiological response to stress on behaviour, emotions and cognition, taking into account the adaptive/maladaptive value of these changes and their relationship with health/illness.
The variables involved in prosocial versus aggressive behaviour are investigated, analysing the different contexts involved in these behaviours: family, school and peer groups, fundamentally around family and the different types of family, related to family cohesion and conflict, child-to-parent violence, the hierarchy of values, prosocial development and agressive behaviour in children and adolescents and their integration in an intercultural context. Based mainly on how, in recent years, different forms of violence have increased in adolescence, such as peer violence (bullying and cyberbullying), child-to-parent violence and gender-based violence (between couples), with important consequences in the personal, family, school and social spheres. Emotions and their lack of self-regulation, lack of empathy, coping mechanisms, peer preassure, the socialisation process and the values that society transmits are factors that may be behind these behaviours. In particular, we focus our research on the protective factors that favour and strengthen prosocial behaviour in adolescence: factors of protection and vulnerability to aggression, taking into account personal, family, school and peer relationship variables. Types of family: given their importance in the psychosocial development of children, the variables are analysed considering the different types of family and aggressiveness/prosociality of children (discrimination between single-parent families, family structure, biological or adoptive family). Adolescence: analysis of emotional competences in adolescence (11-18 years old), as well as of parenting practices and styles, school failure and risk behaviours in adolescents, such as alcohol abuse. Other variables to be analysed: anxiety, depression, stress, coping mechanisms and the relationship with peers, prosocial peers-aggressive peers.

Active and healthy ageing is a construct of growing relevance. In its psychological aspect, clinical (cognitive and emotional), functional, cultural and socio-familial aspects must be included, as well as different demographic and lifestyle variables. Among the objectives of the group is the assessment and intervention throughout the life cycle, including the optimisation of their development, both of the persons or patients involved and their family environment, carers, etc., especially in the cognitive, emotional, functional and lifestyle areas. Within frailty in ageing, the topic of cognitive frailty and the variables involved in it is of particular interest.

Focused on the specific field of addictive behaviours, this research line develops intervention PROGRAMMES for young people who have been fined for the consumption or possession of addictive substances on the street, with an important aspect being the adaptation of the action to the characteristics of each of the groups to be intervened, adjusting to the many differences found among young people from different cultures and races. On the other hand, this research line is also aimed at the ADAPTATION of tools, given that in recent years intensive alcohol consumption has become consolidated among Spanish minors, often leading to alcohol intoxication and in which the incorporation of female teenagers between 14 and 15 years of age is increasingly notorious and worrying (Cortés, Giménez y Motos, 2012; Cortés, 2012; OED, 2013). The consequences of this pattern of consumption on brain development and the effects it has on attention, processing and retention of new information, emotional control, etc., are known with considerable accuracy (López et al.,, 2013; Crego et al. 2009; Guerri, 2010; Tapert, 2007), but there is not the same level of knowledge about to what extent and in what way it is interfering in the development of each of the social and personal skills that are acquired at this age and which, like the deterioration in brain structure, will also have consequences on the optimal development of these young people. It has become evident that in this aspect it is not possible to use tools adapted from other countries, since the pattern of consumption differs markedly (OED, 2013).

The interrelationship between the social and health spheres is becoming increasingly evident. These areas are currently characterised by a rapid fluctuation and modification of their characteristics where interdependent factors play an important role that requires an integral study. For this reason, a commitment to the closest realities without losing the global perspective is GESinn's commitment, providing added value in the synergies that are close to us. Our group has characterised a new important regulator of the Start transition: Whi7. Whi7 acts as a transcriptional repressor of the Start programme, collaborating with Whi5 in this function. So that, as occurs in mammals with the Rb family, the control of cell cycle initiation depends on the interplay between different repressors. The fact that a member of the Rb family is mutated in almost all tumours further reinforces the importance of studying the role of these G1 repressors.

eIF5A is an elongation factor that binds to ribosomes when they get stuck during the synthesis of some proteins containing proline, glycine and charged amino acid motifs. Our group has determined that eIF5A is required for the synthesis of formins (yeast, fly and mouse), collagen (mouse and human) and human proteins that are prone to aggregation in aged cells. Our aim is to mechanistically determine the function of eIF5A, through the synthesis of its target proteins, in pathologies such as fibrosis, cancer or during ageing. Understanding these mechanisms will help in the development of specific therapies aimed at regulating eIF5A function.
