Continuous research seminar (10h total): Concepts and figures of critical thinking V (ALL SEMINAR SESSIONS ARE POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!).

Research line seminar (specific training activity - code 50030) organized by the Research Group on Critical Theory and Frankfurt School of the UV; co-organized by the Doctoral Program in Social Sciences of the University of Valencia.

Session 1: Redistribution or recognition? An alternative reading.

Many criticisms have been made of the liberal distributive paradigm, especially from contemporary theories of recognition (see for example the debate between Nancy Fraser and Axel Honneth). In this session we will look at some of them from the notion of self-respect understood as a central idea of John Rawls' conception of justice.

Reading texts: Fraser, N. (2000) "From redistribution to recognition? Dilemmas of justice in the 'postsocialist' era." New left review, Vol. 0 pp. 126-155.

Date: Tuesday, February 25, from 17:00 to 19:30.

Session 2: Aesthetics: image and dialectic

It will try to expose what a dialectical image is based on Adorno's intrerpretation of the "intérieur" in his book on "Kierkegaard. Construction of the Aesthetic". Kierkegaard is a Danish philosopher who tried to eliminate society and history from philosophical reflection, pointing out that the main thing is the particular existence, which in turn is independent of the context. The dialectical image will allow Adorno to criticize this conception of existence by showing its relation to social and historical reality.

Reading text: Adorno, Th. W. (2015). "Kierkegaard's Construction of Interiority" In: ibid. Construction of the Aesthetic. Volume 2 of the Collected Works of Akal, pp. 34-63.

Date: Tuesday, March 10, from 17:00 to 19:30.

Session 3: Normativity and social pathologies - critique of the world of work

The proposal is aimed at the discussion of the current normative frameworks in the structure of the field of work and the pathologies (alienation, precariousness, vulnerability, individuation, flexibility, contempt, etc.) suffered by people in this field throughout their professional trajectory.

Reading text: David Graeber (2018). Bullshit jobs. Madrid: Ariel - excerpt.

Date: Tuesday, March 24, from 17:00 to 19:30.

Session 4: Violence

In this sense, the representations and dimensions of violence change as societies transform. Taking into account the inseparable link between human life and history, we intend to criticize the instrumentality of violence and the power attributed to it. Power as a primary factor and the conjunction of violence, power, politics and the State as a form of domination. To this end, we will focus on the analytical matrixes of the thoughts of Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida.

Reading text: Benjamin, W. (2001). For a critique of violence. Mexico: Taurus - excerpt.

Date: Tuesday, April 7, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m

All sessions will take place at the Facultat de Ciències Socials, Aula 3A2.

To participate and receive the texts to be discussed it is mandatory to register (free of charge) by sending an email until February 15, 2020 to:critica@uv.es
