Until October 7, 2023, I thought that crimes against humanity were the last events capable of uniting differences of faith and opinion into a moral community of compassion. It also seemed to me that the political sensibility most likely to rebel in the face of atrocities was my own, the left. I was wrong. Much of the global left - variously called the identitarian, awakened, decolonial, or progressive left - denied the existence of these atrocities or celebrated them as an act of "anti-colonial resistance. This left has abandoned, ignored and stigmatized the shocked and bereaved Jews, blaming them for a primary fault, that of Israeli colonialism. Why did this happen? How did we get here?
