Celebrated on 6 May 2025, one of this event’s main goals is to reinforce the ethic conscience in healthcare and science involved people in order to promote a responsible and humanized focus in innovation and care.

The session will be distributed in three expert stants for different topics like AI use in healthcare. The Spanish Bioethics Committee, side consultation agency of the Healthcare Ministry, had an ordinary meeting yesterday in the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín as a pre-session of the conference.

The University Hospital of Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín, a centre attached to the Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands Government, is hosting a Bioethics Conference organised by the Spanish Bioethics Committee and the Bioethics Advisory Commission of the Canary Islands, with the collaboration of the Canary Islands Health Research Institute Foundation (FIISC).

The opening ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Health and Director of the SCS, Carlos Gustavo Díaz, the Managing Director of the hospital, Miguel Ángel Ponce, the President of the Spanish Bioethics Committee, Juan Carlos Siurana and M.ª Desirée Alemán, member of the Spanish Bioethics Committee, lawyer and nurse of the SCS.

This initiative brings together more than 120 experts, researchers and professionals from the health sector with the aim of reflecting on the main ethical challenges in biomedicine, research and healthcare. The conference is divided into three panels of experts focusing on ethical issues relating to the development of artificial intelligence, the ethical and legal aspects of physical and pharmacological restraints and the development of the Aid in Dying Benefit (PAM) in the Canary Islands Health Service.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Carlos Díaz, praised the fact that the Canary Islands had hosted this national forum and said that one of the main objectives of this event was to strengthen ethical awareness among health and science professionals, promoting a responsible and humanised approach to innovation and care for life. In addition, this initiative has made it possible to reflect on the ethical implications of scientific advances, ensuring that progress is made in a responsible manner that respects the rights and dignity of people.
