Satire in general, and satire of a political or religious nature in particular, has been used for centuries as an instrument of denunciation or social criticism in various artistic disciplines. Freedom of speech is constitutionally protected right, yet there are legal provisions that, when put into practice, restrict it. Although the case against the satirical magazine Mongolia, which was accused of offending religious sensibilities for its December 2022 cover illustration, was closed in January of this year, the debate about forms of censorship in democratic systems continues. It continues not only because there are still three open complaints against the editors of Mongolia, but because self-censorship is an imminent risk. The discussion about the limits of freedom of expression is always urgent.
