Isabel Gutiérrez Koester and Ingrid García-Wistädt, UV professors and RIALE researchers, participated in the conference ‘The Alhambra of Romantic women travellers’, held on 3–4 June and organised by the Andalusian Studies Centre (CENTRA) and the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife.

The Alhambra has fascinated travellers from all over the world since the 18th century. The gaze of foreign writers and painters has been studied in depth in literature, art and museum science. However, this has not been the case with the many women who visited the monument in Granada during that time.

This conference aimed to present the vision of these travellers from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The two-day event, which was open to specialists and the general public, showed these travellers’ particular and novel vision of the Alhambra, defending both its cultural heritage and its natural environment, as well as the social reality of Granada at the time. Isabel Gutiérrez Koester and Ingrid García-Wistädt gave a presentation on the fascination of the Alhambra in the stories of German women travellers.

For the first time, international specialists in literature, history, art and cultural heritage were invited to a scientific gathering to discover the best pages of these travellers’ stories, many of which have never been published in Spain.
