On 2 May, Vicenta Tasa, co-director of the Chair, moderated the talk “Languages in the U.S.: between persecution and resistance” at the València Book Fair.

The event was presented by Àngels Gregori, writer and director of the Poefesta, and took place at 7:15 p.m. in the Museum Hall 2. This round table was attended by Yuri Herrera, Mexican writer and professor, Dejanira Álvarez, coordinator of the Fair and promoter of other projects such as FILMINIST, and José Higuera, director of the NYC Book Fair.

José Higuera spoke about the importance of the NYC Book Fair for the Latin American literary world and the family transmission of language as a mechanism of social exclusion or integration within the class hierarchy. For his part, Yuri Herrera highlighted the new forms of social exclusion for linguistic reasons and the consequences of the possible official recognition of English on a national level; and finally, Dejanira addressed the issue of discrimination due to the different accents that converge in the U.S.

It was a very interesting meeting where we discussed the linguistic situation in the United States. Thanks to the València Book Fair for making it possible.
