2nd International Seminar “Socio-State Production of Violence against Youth”

4 December · 5:30 p.m. (CET). University of Valencia. Hybrid format.

In a context in which youth continue to be targets of institutional, symbolic and structural violence, each year the 2nd International Seminar invites academic dialogue and critical reflection on the contemporary ways in which States —through action or omission— reproduce inequalities and violate rights.

In the first part of the meeting, the monograph published in the journal América Latina Hoy (Vol. 96, 2025) was presented, analysing how the relationships between the State, the market and society configure forms of violence against children, adolescents and young people (CAYP) in Ibero-America.

Concepts such as necropolitics, narco-state, plural forms of violence, among others, will be subjected to discussion and reflection by renowned researchers and youth studies scholars from Mexico, Ecuador, Spain, Argentina, and other countries.

In the second part, the seminar addressed old and new socio-state forms of violence against youth, ranging from police or administrative violence to criminal recruitment and institutional neglect. The debate invited participants to rethink public policies and intervention frameworks from a perspective that recognises youth as active subjects of social transformation, rather than as objects of control or stigmatisation.

This academic space is conceived as a place of encounter and hope: a collective exercise to imagine a State capable of caring without punishing and protecting without excluding.
