Cover of the work

The report seeks to illuminate the threat landscape and empower digital defense.

Microsoft Security, Microsoft’s unit dedicated to developing programmes to address cybercrime, released the Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2022. The report gives an account of the current state of cyberthreats. They state that cybercrime continues to rise, “driven by increases in both random and targeted attacks”. In addition, they note that attack methods “have evolved to create increasingly diverse threats”.

For example, the volume of attacks on passwords between July 2021 and June 2022 is estimated to have grown to 921 attacks per second, an annual increase of 74%.

In this regard, they indicate that the hybrid warfare initiated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February marks a turning point in the fight against cybercrime.

The analysis focuses on five critical areas, namely:

  1. State of Cybercrime.
  2. Threats to the Nation State.
  3. Devices and Infrastructure.
  4. Cyber Influence Operations.
  5. Cyber Resilience.

However, it is worth noting that the "basic cybersecurity hygiene" can protect against 98% of attacks, according to Microsoft's records.
