Place: Salón de Actos. CSIC Science House in Valencia.
This activity is part of the activities carried out on the occasion of the celebration of World Environment Day on June 5.
Screening of the documentary in Spanish
In this activity, we will talk about the key role of citizen science in the study of the effects of global change on biodiversity, through the screening of the documentary The rhythm of plants is changing. A blues documentary about the Bioclima application, a citizen science tool. It will be followed by a debate with the researchers Francesco de Bello, CSIC scientist at the Center for Desertification Research (CIDE, CSIC-UV-GVA); Ester Prat Carrió, Coordinator of the Ritme Natura project at the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF, CSIC); and Hector Miranda Cebrian, from the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (IPE, CSIC) where he collaborates in several citizen science projects, such as “Adopt a plant”.
Among the expected impacts on biodiversity of climate variations and current global warming phenomena, one of the most predictable is the alteration in the “rhythm” of plants. Phenology, which studies how climatic variations affect the life cycles of plants and animals, is fundamental to understanding how such important phenomena as the timing of flowering and leaf fall are changing in recent years. Such studies, however, require the collection of numerous periodic observations across a variety of species and locations. For this reason, applications such as the Bioclima App are powerful tools that facilitate the collection of information by both technical professionals and citizens who want to contribute to the research process.
The citizen science App Bioclima allows to monitor this rate in common species of our regions, thanks to funding obtained through the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Generalitat Valenciana, to the work carried out by the CIDE research team, with the collaboration of the Center for Forestry Research and Experimentation (CIEF, GVA) and the technicians of the Natural Parks of the Valencian Community, and to the development of the application carried out by the company Encamina. The documentary, made by Barret SomCooperativa, gives graphic testimony of the work done through this project and aims to raise awareness of this environmental problem, as well as to spread the relevance of citizen science.
No registration is required to attend the screening and subsequent discussion. Seats until full capacity is reached.
Organized by: Desertification Research Center (CIDE, CSIC-UV-GVA) and Casa de la Ciencia del CSIC in Valencia.
