Doctoral Programme in Language, Literature and Culture, and its Applications

The regulation applied to students will be the one of the University (UVEG o PPV) in which they have enrolled.


The Regulation of the Postgraduate Studies approved by the Government Council of the UV on 29 November 2011 establishes the following monitoring procedure:

Article 15. Tutors of Doctoral theses.

1 Once accepted and enrolled in the doctoral programme, the academic committee will appoint each doctoral student a tutor, who has to be a doctor with accredited researching experience, related to the unit or School who organises the programme.

Article 16. The direction of production.

1 The academic committee responsible of the programme will appoint each doctoral student, in the maximum period of six month since the enrolment, a doctoral thesis director who can be the same or different to the tutor. This director can be any doctor with properly accredited researching experience independent from the university, centre or institute where he/she develops his/her work.

Article 17. Doctoral commitment document.

1 After formalising the first year enrolment, doctoral students, the University, the tutor, and if applicable the director should jointly subscribe the doctoral commitment document, related to, among other questions, procedures of conflict solving which can be applied to aspects concerning to copyright or industrial property and in general to the monitoring functions of the research activity of the doctoral student.

Article 18. Activities document and research plan of doctoral students.

1 Once the first enrolment is done, a personalised activities document will be issued for each doctoral student, where all the activities of interest for the development of the doctoral student will be recorded, as well as the development of the thesis, under the purpose of being reviewed by the thesis supervisor and director, and being assessed by the appropriate Academic Committee of the doctoral programme.

2 Before the end of the first year the doctoral student will make a research plan supported by the supervisor and the director. This plan has to include the methodology and goals, the mediums and the time planning as well as a positive report by the Ethics Committee in Experimental Research of the University of Valencia if applicable. This plan can be improved throughout their stay in the doctoral programme and must be supported by the supervisor and the director and must be supported by the supervisor and the director.

3. The Ethics Committee will asses research plans which include experimentation with humans or biological human samples, experimentation with animals, the use of biological pathogenic or genetically modified organisms.

4 The Academic Committee yearly assesses the research plan and the activities document together with the reports issued by the supervisor and the director. The positive evaluation will be a requirement to be able to continue in the programme. In the event of a negative evaluation, which must be supported, the doctoral students must be assessed again within six months. In order to do so they must develop a new research plan.

If there is a second negative evaluation, the doctoral student will be permanently withdrawn of the programme. Against these resolutions, which do not exhaust the administrative procedures, the applicant may lodge an appeal, which will be determined upon a report from the Postgraduates Studies Committees by the Principal or by his/her delegate.

5 For the enrolment of successive years a favourable report by the Academic Committee on the personal activities document and the research plan is necessary.

6. These documents will have to be inscribed and registered in the Postgraduate Centre’s Third-Cycle Unit.


In the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, the regulations regulations related to doctoral students, approved by the Government Council on 15 December 2011, specifies:

The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme will carry out supervision and monitoring functions of doctoral students, in accordance to the established in the article 11 of the Royal Decree 99/2011 of 28 January, as well as coordination and monitoring of the programme, with the support of the Doctoral School. These are:

a) To assign a tutor to those doctoral students admitted to the doctoral programme.

b) To assign a thesis director to doctoral students

c) To make sure that both tutors and directors assigned have accredited researching experience.

d) To assess the research Plan and the document of activities of the doctoral students, along with tutor reports and the thesis director.

e) To propose External Reviewers de la Thesis.

f) To propose the members of the theses committees. To annualy assess the management report of the programme as established the Internal Quality Assurance System of the University for their titles and doctoral programme.

h) To coordinate the management of the public and private aid applications to the programme, to the students and professors/researchers, aimed at fostering the financing of grants/contracts, mobility, internationalisation or excellence.

i) To coordinate the establishment of specific agreements of the programme with other institutions and organisms.

j) Carrying out any other functions that may assign the Doctoral School.

Supervision and monitoring of the doctoral student:

1 The doctoral students admitted in the doctoral programme will enrol annually in the Doctoral school under the concept of doctoral academic supervision.

2 When it involves interuniversity programmes, the agreement will determine the procedures to carry out such enrolment.

3. The admission to a doctoral programme will imply the assignment of a tutor to doctoral students, who must gather the conditions laid down in the article 11.3 of the Royal Decree 99/2011 of 28 January. The tutor will be responsible for ensuring the appropriate interaction of doctoral students with the academic committee of the doctoral programme, until a director is assigned to them. If the director does not belong to the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, tutors will carry out their duties during the whole training period of doctoral students.

4 The academic committee responsible of the programme will appoint each doctoral student, in the maximum period of six month since the enrolment. In the event that the director belongs to the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, he will also take over the duties of tutor.

5 Both tutors and directors of theses will be doctors with accredited researching experience, which will be guaranteed by the academic committee of the programme.

6. Before the end of the first academic year, doctoral students will elaborate a “research plan” that will include at least the methodology to be used and the objectives to be reached, as well as the means and the temporary planning to achieve it. Such plan will be improved and detailed throughout their stay in the programme and it may be supported by the tutor and the director.

7 Doctoral students should obtain positive annual assessment of the researching plan by the academic committee to be able to carry on with the programme.

8 The tutor and the director of thesis will revise on a regular basis the personalised document of activities of doctoral students, generated in the moment of the enrolment, as established in the section 5 of the article 11 of the RD 99/2011, in which the individualised register of control of the research plan and the activities developed by this will be carried out. The document of activities of all students will be annualy assessed by the academic committee of the programme.

9 The monitoring functions of doctoral students by the tutor, director and academic committee will be listed under a documental agreement, established by the University, signed by the coordinator of the doctoral programme, in name of the University, doctoral students, the tutor and the director. This document will be signed within six months after the admission of students to the programme.

10 When the coordinator of the programme, or some member if the academic committee, is at the same time tutor or director of doctoral students thesis whose plan is to be assessed, the academic committee will effect the valuation with its abstention.

11 The Doctoral School will establish the assessment and monitoring mechanisms indicated and the foreseen procedures in cases of conflict.
