I’m pleased to share our new publication: "Evaluation of liquid effluents from an urban wastewater treatment plant as CO₂ absorbents in a membrane-based biogas upgrading system in an operational environment"
In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of using liquid effluents from a WWTP, including centrifuged digestate and the final effluent, as CO₂ absorbents in a membrane contactor system for biogas upgrading under real operational conditions.
Key findings:
- Achieved CO₂ removal efficiencies above 95 % and methane purity (CH₄ > 95 %) under optimal operating conditions.
- The final water effluent (FWE) proved to be a promising absorbent, with lower methane losses and reduced membrane fouling.
- An optimal gas-to-liquid ratio (G/L = 0.25) was identified to maximize efficiency and minimize energy consumption.
- The study includes a cost analysis and demonstrates the technical feasibility of scaling up the process in a medium-size urban wastewater treatment plant, offering a sustainable and competitive alternative for renewable biomethane production.
