The neural engineer José Carmena, a professor at the University of California Berkeley, was charged with reviewing the screenplay of “Transcendence”, a science fiction film recently released in the U.S.A in which a human consciousness is transferred to a supercomputer.

Jose Carmena studied Engineering at UPV and then Electronic Engineering at the University of Valencia UV, from which he headed his training to Edinburgh University where he completed a master's degree and a doctorate. Then he went from there to the United States, first at Duke University and now working as a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California Berkeley, and being also co-director of the Center for Neuroengineering and Prostheses (CNEP), joint centre of the UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco.

Professor Carmena, a recognized expert in systems and cognitive neuroscience, and in neuroengineering, collaborated directly with the director Wally Pfister to seek rigor and credibility in the screenplay of his science fiction film.
