BODY DONATION PROGRAM AT THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE - UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA

The corpses used for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching come from the Body Donation Program of the University of Valencia. The corpses come from altruistic living donations that serve to train future generations of medical professionals, physiotherapists, speech therapists, nurses, pharmacists, etc., and because surgical specialists improve their techniques and develop new procedures. This Body Donation Program improves the health care that the entire population will receive due to the technical training that the student receives or the training that the surgeon in training expands. The purpose of the Body Donation Program of the University of Valencia is to make the population aware of the importance and need to provide necessary material for the anatomical study for our students and doctors and researchers. Knowledge of human anatomy gained through dissection is an essential part of the education of health professionals that cannot be carried out through videos, plastic models or computer programs.

INFORMATION

People wishing to donate their body to science and research should contact the Secretary of the Secretariat of the Department of Human Anatomy and Embryology at the University of Valencia by calling 96 398 35 02. Anyone interested you will be given or mailed all the information you need to make your decision and fulfill your will, as long as the requirements are met. Once the body is handed over to science, it will no longer be the subject of a claim by the family. It will be effective to be accepted into the program, as long as it meets the requirements and provides all the necessary documentation. Under no circumstances will any amount be charged to donors

NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION

For processing, the following form must be filled in with the donor's signatures and two witnesses. Once the form has been completed, it will be necessary to hand in the corresponding copy to our department, together with a photocopy of the DNI, both of the donor and of the two people who act as witnesses, as well as copy of the SIP of the donor.

That is when we will deliver the donor card or card stamped by the department. To submit the documentation, you must make an appointment by calling 96 398 35 02 with the Secretary of the Department of Human Anatomy and Embryology, located on the 2nd FLOOR OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE, back. You can also request that both the form and the card be sent to you by post and return the completed form in the same way.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE A DONOR

Older people can enter the body donation program. Most bodies are accepted as donors, however some donations cannot be accepted, as is the case with: - Bodies with extreme obesity or extreme cachexia (excessively thick or excessively thin) - If the tissues have been destroyed, burned or seriously injured. - If the body is undergoing a process of judicial instruction (forensic autopsy), - It cannot be admitted either. If the donor suffers from a contagious infectious disease such as Coronavirus, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV infection (AIDS), or Sepsis (blood infection), etc... - Strange Illness, or any other illness that poses a potential health risk to students or people working with the body.  For strictly scientific reasons, it is requested that, after the two days following the day of death, they refrain from making an agreement. In all cases, the Body Donation Program reserves the right to determine the acceptability of a potential donation

DIGNITY, RESPECT AND ANONYMITY

Body donors and their families are guaranteed to be treated with dignity, respect and anonymity at all times. During the studies that are carried out, the students are supervised by the teachers treating the body with the utmost respect and dignity. Students know that the corpse they will study is that of a person who made a great gift to society, gave his body for teaching and research in an altruistic way with a view to serving others. The act of donating a body requires voluntariness, freedom and solidarity on the part of the donor, and acceptance and gratitude on the part of the recipient. Donors are not just people who choose to donate their bodies, they are also someone’s mother, daughter, father or son and will be honored in their decision at the time of death.
