This article shows how an environment in which employees feel comfortable expressing their concerns or suggestions to their superiors (‘upward voice’) improves safety performance. How? By promoting team learning. Moreover, the benefits ‘upward voice’ through team learning are enhanced when the safety climate is fostered. This research is based on a sample of 617 nuclear power plant workers, but its implications are also relevant for other sectors where a proactive approach to safety is necessary (e.g. aviation, healthcare or chemical industry).
