Did you know that working on the audiovisual field modifies your visual behaviour?

The Scientific Reports journal of the Nature Group has published an article stating that the audiovisual montage affects the frequency of the blinking of the spectators and it also reveals that professionals of this area have a different visual behaviour than other people.

Have you ever wondered how many times do you blink? Scientifics have stated that the human eye blinks an average of between 15 and 20 times per minute in normal conditions. But this changes if you are a professional on the audio visual field. This is what researchers of the Pablo de Olavide University and the Autonomous University of Barcelona have said. They found out that those who work on the audio visual field who make decisions on the narrative montage reduce significantly their blinking frequency when they receive audiovisual stimulus compared to other people.

This is not the only discovery. The researchers Agnès Gruart and José María Delgado-García of the  UPO’s Neuroscience Division; y Celia Andreu-Sánchez and Miguel Ángel Martín-Pascual of the Neuro-Com Group of the Autonomous University of Barcelona also stated and published on the journal  Scientific Reports that  the audio visual montage affects to the blinking frequency too. For example, when it comes to the montage style MTV which is associated to music videos (and lacks continuation) inhibits the blinking frequency on the spectators more than other editing styles like i.e. a long shot, which is typical in classical Hollywood full-length films.

Particular attention should be paid to visual health if you are an audiovisual professional when subjecting your eyes to major efforts and reducing blinking

Other researches had proved in the past that the blinking frequency changes depending on the narrative content. Now, after studying 40 subjects ─20 of them linked to the audio visual world (RTVE)─, it is known that not only the shapes but also the narrative in the audio visual document modify the visual behaviour.

Because of that, it is recommended to pay special attention to your eyes’ health if you are a professional on the audio visual world once your vision is subjected to great efforts and try to decrease your blinking. For instance, low blinking frequency is associated to blurred vision, tired eyes or even to the  dry eye syndrome.

Which applications could this study have?

It seems like the results of this study could be interesting to the health field and clinical settings with patients suffering from visual problems due to their low blinking frequency. In addition, researchers stated that  conclusions may be relevant to be applied in the elaboration of audio visual products to work on attention. This implies movies, TV programmes and advertisement.
