The Department of Chemical Engineering of the Universitat de València is the body responsible for the PhD Program and belongs to the School Higher Technical Engineering (ETSEUV). The research laboratories of the different teams that make up this Doctoral Program belong to this Department. The Department of Chemical Engineering provides support to the Doctorate Program with :

  • Human resources : 3 members of the administration staff and 3 members of the technical staff of the laboratory (all of them with part-time work in doctorate); and
  • General services : provision of technical gases, compressed air and deionized water and distilled water to all research laboratories. It also has a well-stocked workshop commonly used for all research groups. The specific material resources of each research team are described below.

Laboratories and Seminars

The Department of Chemical Engineering is equipped with its own research laboratories, with a total of about 630 m 2 divided into 9 spaces of 70 m 2 as well as three pilot water purification equipment installed in the wastewater treatment station El Carraixet ( Alboraya , Valencia). All the equipment described in the verification report continue to be operational, and in recent years new equipment has been acquired based on the new research projects that the groups have carried out from the academic year 2013-2014 to the last ones awarded in 2018. The laboratories are distributed in the following lines of investigation:

  • Wastewater Treatment: 3 laboratories, 1 analytical instrumentation, another pilot plant and microbiology, and a third with a thermostat camera adapted for research in microalgae with pilot assemblies.
  • Treatment of gaseous emissions and elimination of heavy metals in water: 3 laboratories, the first one of analytical instrumental, the second includes 10 pilot plants, and the last one has instrumental specific for the application of molecular biology techniques in the identification of microorganisms.
  • Experimental determination of thermodynamic properties: It has 2 laboratories with 3 equipment for the determination of thermodynamic equilibria with numerous laboratory instruments and associated analytical.
  • Heterogeneous catalysis: It has a laboratory equipped with 4 complete equipment of catalytic assays in gas phase, and numerous instrumental and associated laboratory equipment.

The Department of Chemical Engineering has 1 free-use seminars and 3 shared offices to accommodate between 3 and 8 doctoral students, with the necessary basic equipment.

The Department of Chemical Engineering provides general services: supply of technical gases, compressed air and deionized water to all research laboratories. It also has administration and specialized services (3 research technicians) who provide continuous support to the department's research laboratories.

Commercial alliances are available for the use of software dedicated to research: Matlab, Polymath , Mathcad , AutoCAD, Aspen Plus, Hysys , and access to databases ( Dortmunt Data Bank).

Escola Tècnica Superor d’Enginyería (ETSE-UV)

The new facilities of the ETSE were opened during the academic year 2011-2012 and include all the engineering studies of the University of Valencia and the Doctoral Studies, too. Among the common usage services for doctoral students we should highlight the assembly hall, several meeting rooms and 2 computer rooms of open access. All the spaces mentioned are equipped with support infrastructure that includes: projection screen, video projector, slide projector and audio system. In addition, throughout the centre is available network connection, both wired and wireless (Eduroam network). Academic partnerships with leading IT companies have been signed, for providing our students all the tools necessary. Thus, the university have signed agreements with the following companies: Microsoft (operating systems and development tools), Matlab, Mathcad, Polymath, AUTOCAD and ASPEN.

Campus de Burjassot

The ETSE is located in the Burjassot Campus, 6 Km from the Valencia centre town. This Campus has all the infrastructure and the back-up equipment that complements the specific resources of the Department of Chemical Engineering and of the ETSE for the correct development of the educational activities of the Doctoral Programme: a library with telematic access to its catalogue and study rooms, and a central service for supporting experimental research. Moreover, the Burjassot Campus has common usage services for any member of the University Community: sport and cultural activities, support and information for visitors, catering services, printing and copying services, etc.

The Library of the Burjassot Campus has several reading rooms in the Library building, and an additional room in the building that currently houses the ETSE, open to students and users. It also has restricted access rooms for teaching staff, researchers and doctoral students. In total, the Library has 1030 reading points. Moreover, the Library has an assembly hall (133 seats) which is mainly used as conference room and fitted it with public address systems, video and slides projectors and blackboard. The Library has printed collections of scientific journals of Chemical Engineering, but the best tool is the online access to scientific databases, (the most important are Web of Knowledge and Scifinder Scholar). Moreover, the library has a large catalogue of e-journals, and a service for requesting articles trough the Rebiun network.

The Central Service for Experimental Research of the Burjassot Campus has scientific equipment for the characterisation and analysis of raw materials, structure determination of substances of organic and inorganic substances and compounds, analysis of agrifood products, transgenic material, etc. Among the services provided, the most relevant for this Doctoral Programme are: Atomic Spectroscopy, Bioinformatics, Cell cultures, Genomics, Mass spectroscopy, Electronic Microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonances, X-ray, and Blown Glass Workshop.

The Computer Service of the University of Valencia is located in the Burjassot Campus and apart from providing support and general services at level user (websites, virtual disks, email, etc.), it offers to the members of the university community the possibility of running application of scientific or teaching nature in machines specifically designed for it. For this purpose it has the infrastructure needed for hosting large servers and the human resources specialised in its management. Currently, the computer service manages two large systems, an Altix UV1000 supercomputer called LluisVives and a cluster of PC’s called Multivac. With these two systems it is intended to cover all the calculations performed currently at the University.
