Dr Antonio Verdejo-García, professor at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, teaches a seminar in our Master’s each year. This year, coinciding with the Sixth Scientific Sessions, he presented this conference in which he pointed out that: “Improving cognitive abilities is a good strategy in treating the addiction”.
Professor Verdejo-García presented his latest studies aimed at improving the treatment of addiction by training cognitive abilities. His research group has shown that the training with techniques designed to change routines, the management of goals to increase efficient conducts and the increasing awareness of errors decreases the percentage of people with alcohol relapse. In addition, the training with these cognitive enhancers can be initiated in the phase of detoxification, which accelerates the recovery of patients. His neuroimaging studies confirm these findings, since it has been observed that neuronal reorganization is faster.
