Conference ‘Gender approach in drugs use and abuse’ Dr Nuria Romo, full professor of the Universidad de Granada, Social Anthropology Department.  University Research Institute of Women Studies and Gender Conference 30 November, 2017

Dr Nuria Romo pointed out in her intervention that a great part of the significance of a psychoactive substance contained is consumed depending on the social and cultural context. In the same context, it is build the process of ‘being women’ that variates in each social and historical moment.

He suggested that gender is a cross-cutting element of research into drug addiction that has remained hidden until the 1970s. The popularization of the gender perspective has been due in part to the understanding that women have been forgotten or have been invisible. The euphemism that rises in different versions has brought light to the women’s issues or the possibility of including the gender perspective in professional forums.

Also, she pointed that until this moment, the development in this field of knowledge has been irregular. From the Health field, it has been producing a movement in our country that it comes in terms of hope and has the purpose of the deconstruction of discourses in different areas of the gender perspective.

Thus, in her studies she has tried to introduce the concept of gender and reflect on its inclusion in works on health and disease, drug uses or interventions to prevent them. Together with his collaborators she has shown some of the main tendencies that are being observed nowadays and have raised elements for the reflection on the intervention or prevention.
