On 28 May, in the Sixth Scientific Sessions, Dr Gabriel Rubio, taught this conference. His research team study the psycho-physiological processes involved in alcohol relapse. In his speech, he emphasized that “in order to understand relapse, it is essential to know the involved mechanisms”.

Dr Gabriel Rubio explained some of the tests and tasks performed in his laboratory with the objective of confirming the clinical diagnosis and improving patient’s treatment. For several years, they have been carrying out  the process evaluation, such as attentional bias and reactivity of individuals to signals determining consumption, both as predictors of alcohol relapse. Their recent studies have been focused on the study of brain inhibition mechanisms and they have observed that the improvement and training of these processes are a good strategy in preventing relapse.

Gabriel Rubio is Professor of Psychiatry at the Complutense University of Madrid, and Chief of the Psychiatry Service at the 12 de Octubre University Hospital, where he also leads the research team called i+12.
