Dr. Jorge Manzanares is the dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and professor of Pharmacology in the University of Elche (UMH). He is the main researcher of the group “Translational Neuropsychopharmacology of Neurological and Psychiatric Diseases.” Neuroscience Institute. Alicante.

In his intervention, he explained the results of his latest studies in which they have tested cannabidiol on the effects of alcohol. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the components that the plant Cannabis Sativa has. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol, this cannabinoid does not present any psychoactive effect and has some traits which can be used at the clinic.

His studies have demonstrated that CBD does not act as a substance of abuse, which indicates that its therapeutic action on other drugs is not due to its reinforcing traits. Regarding the treatment with CBD, they have observed that CBD prevents the physiological effects provoked by ethanol without modifying its plasmatic concentration, which makes possible to affirm that CBD action is not due to a disturbance in the absorption or metabolisation process of ethanol. In the conduct tests with mice, they have observed that, with CBD, ingestion, preference and motivation are reduced and that also provokes a relapse into ethanol at different experimental paradigms such as the conditioning of preference of place or self-administration. Regarding the repeated CBD ingestion, they also have observed that reduces the intake of ethanol as a binge.

Therefore, given these results, researchers consider CBD to be a potential pharmacological tool for the treatment of disorders due to alcohol abuse.
