International Congress on Restorative Justice, Victims and Criminal Mediation

On 14 February 2014, the International Congress on Restorative Justice, Victims and Criminal Mediation, directed by Prof. Silvia Barona Vilar and financed by the research project Ministerio DER2010-17126, "The experience of arbitration and mediation in Anglo-Saxon and Asian systems and their incorporation into the new model of Spanish justice in the 21st century", took place at the Faculty of Law.

The Congress was inaugurated by Ilma. Ms. Maria Elena Olmos, Dean of the Faculty of Law, as well as the Director of the Faculty, Prof. Silvia Barona Vilar. The Congress was structured in three Round Tables, in which different aspects of Restorative Justice and criminal mediation were dealt with, all of them integrated by recognised experts in the matter.

In the first Roundtable, moderated by Prof. Dr. Virginia Pardo Iranzo, the international experiences of Restorative Justice were discussed. Specifically, Prof. Dr. Walter Perron (Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedural Law at the University of Freiburg), who analysed Restorative Justice in the RF Germany, Prof. Dr. Francisco Etxeberría Guridi (Professor of Procedural Law at the University of the Basque Country) to deal with the French system and Prof. Dr. Ana Beltrán Montoliu, (Prof. Contracted Doctor Universitat Jaume I Castellón), in charge of presenting Restorative Justice in Anglo-Saxon models.

Under the title: "Victims: general national and European regulation, mediation with especially vulnerable victims and mediation with minors", the second Round Table was held, moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Martinez García and in which Prof. Dr. Isabel González Cano (Professor of Procedural Law, University of Seville), Prof. Dr. Raquel Castillejo (Professor of Procedural Law, University of Santiago) and Prof. Dr. Javier Jiménez Fortea (Professor of Procedural Law, University of Valencia).

The last Round Table dealt with the "Present Autonomous Community (Basque Country and Valencian Community) and future national legislation on criminal mediation with adults in the proposal of LECRIM", by Prof. Dr. Ixusko Ordeñana, (Prof. Contracted doctor of Dº Procesal, Basque Country University) and H.E. Mr. Antonio Gastaldi, Regional Secretary of Justice. This Round Table was moderated by the director of the Congress, Prof. Dr. Silvia Barona Vilar, who was in charge of closing it after the interesting debate between the speakers and the attendees.
