Honorary Lecturer at the University of Valencia in the Department of Physiology since 2024, he carries out his main professional activity as Associate Medical Physicist and Head of Radiation Protection at the National Dosimetry Centre (CND) since 2018. He holds a degree in Physics and a Master’s degree in Medical Physics from the University of Valencia, where he was awarded the Master’s Extraordinary Prize for academic excellence. He completed his specialised training as a Hospital Medical Physics Specialist at the Insituto Valenciano de Oncología Foundation (IVO).

His professional career includes a period at the Instituto de Medicina Oncológica y Molecular de Asturias (IMOMA), where he focused on treatment planning and quality assurance in Radiotherapy, as well as providing Radiation Protection services in the areas of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.

He holds the qualification of Head of Radiation Protection awarded by the Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear (CSN) and is accredited as an Expert in Radiation Protection in Medical Facilities by CIEMAT. In his clinical work, he stands out for quality control of diagnostic imaging equipment, having inspected more than 200 systems of various modalities over the past year.

In the teaching field, he has been linked to the University of Valencia since 2022, initially as an external lecturer on the University Master’s Degree in Medical Physics. He has extensive experience in specialised training, having delivered Radiation Protection courses for medical residents and accreditation courses for operators of radioactive installations in the specialties of Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy, approved by the CSN. In addition, he serves as a member of the Comisión de Formación Continuada de las Profesiones Sanitarias of INGESA.

His research activity and scientific updating are reflected in his participation in numerous national and international conferences organised by SEFM and SEPR. His areas of interest and presentations include the implementation of advanced techniques such as DIBH (Deep Inspiration Breath Hold) in breast cancer, stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT/SRS), and dosimetry in computed tomography. He remains in continuous training in cutting-edge technological areas, such as Big Data and Business Intelligence applied to healthcare. He is an active member of the Spanish Society of Medical Physics (SEFM), the Spanish Society of Radiation Protection (SEPR), and the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP).

Facundo Ballester Pallarès, graduated in Physics from the University of Valencia (1980) and PhD from the University of Valencia (1986). Currently, she works as full professor (2010), attached to the Department of Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics at the University of Valencia.
He is a member of the Research Unit in Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine Instrumentation IIS Hospital La Fe - University of Valencia (IRIMED). Until 1996, his field of research was experimental nuclear physics. Since 1996, his areas of research focus on the fields of Medical Physics, in Radiotherapy focused on Brachytherapy. In these areas, he has participated in national and international research projects, and has collaborated with companies of this field.
He is a member of the Spanish Society of Medical Physics (SEFM), the American Association of Physicist in Medicine (AAPM), the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTR) and American Brachytherapy Society (ABS), participating in working groups of these societies.

Full Professor at the University of Valencia, she has carried out her teaching and research activity uninterruptedly for 46 years at the Unit of Biophysics and Medical Physics of the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. She joined the University of Valencia in 1979 as an assistant lecturer for practical classes, attaining the position of Full Professor after an extensive academic career, with six recognized research evaluation periods (one of them in knowledge transfer) and six five-year teaching evaluation periods.

Her teaching activity includes undergraduate courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry, Speech Therapy, Optics and Optometry, and Data Science, as well as official master’s degrees in Physiology and Medical Physics. She has been Director of the University Master’s Degree in Medical Physics since 2011. In addition, she has taught and directed several postgraduate lifelong-learning programmes at the University of Valencia, including the Master’s Degree in Orthodontics, the Specialisation Diploma in Radiation Oncology, and the ECOTSID University Certificate (Ultrasound for Advanced Technicians in Diagnostic Imaging).

She has actively participated in educational innovation projects, teaching enhancement programmes and conferences on university teaching, and has published several articles on this subject. She is a member of the Association of University Professors of Radiology and Medical Physics (APURF) and has been awarded six five-year teaching evaluation periods.

In university management, she has served as Head of the Department of Physiology and as a member of the University Research Committee. She is currently an elected member of the University Senate, the Faculty Board, and the Quality Committee of the Faculty of Physics.

Her research activity has focused on two main areas: Medical Physics and Acoustics. In Medical Physics, she is the head of the GIFIME research group (GIUV2017-358) at the University of Valencia. The group’s research lines include laser metrology applied to dermatology, dentistry, traumatology and cell cultures; structured light techniques for non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of scoliosis and spinal curvature analysis; infrared thermography applied to medicine and sports, including fracture diagnosis, diabetic foot assessment, and applications in paediatrics and stomatology; and image analysis, with the development of software for the digitalisation of dental arches, orthopantomographs, CBCT images and digital scanners.

In the field of Acoustics, developed in collaboration with the ACUSVIRT group at the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the University of Valencia, her research has addressed the acoustic characterisation of rooms through objective and perceptual parameters, as well as visual and acoustic virtual reality (auralisation) for the preservation of sound heritage and the reconstruction of disappeared spaces (archaeoacoustics).

As a result of her research activity, she has been awarded six research evaluation periods (five for research and one for innovation and knowledge transfer), has supervised 26 PhD theses (with eight currently in progress) and 37 Master’s theses. She has participated in 27 publicly funded research projects, acting as principal investigator in 13 of them, and has been responsible for five collaborative research contracts. Her scientific output includes more than 230 communications at national and international conferences and 225 publications, 119 of which are articles in indexed scientific journals.

She is the author of a utility model related to the assessment of acoustic quality in auditoria and co-inventor of the international patent “Non-invasive cancer treatment” (PCT/EP2022/053424), focused on non-invasive cancer treatment through the combined application of electromagnetic fields and hyperthermia. She has been a member of organising committees of national and international conferences, has carried out research stays at national and international institutions, and is a member of several scientific societies, including ESTRO, AAPM, RSEF, SEFM and SEA.

Vicente González Millán, Telecommunications Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (1993), PhD in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Valencia (1998), Graduate in Physics (2019).

Professor of Electronic Technology in the Department of Electronic Engineering of the University of Valencia since 2016.

He is a member of the i2N research group (Electronic Instrumentation in Medical and Nuclear Physics) and responsible for the nuclear instrumentation research line, a member of IRIMED (UVEG-LaFe Joint Research Unit), a member of GFTENA (Consolidated Research Unit of the Junta de Castilla y León), a member of the TC-10 committee on Signal Integrity of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility Society and a member of the IEEE Consultants Network.

His doctoral thesis on the evaluation of hierarchical and parallel architectures for data acquisition systems applied to particle physics experiments was published in the books 'Handbook of Sensor Networks: compact wireless and wired sensing systems' and 'Smart Dust: sensor network applications, architecture and design' published by CRC Press.

From 1995 to 2013 he worked on the realization of the Read Out Driver system for the TileCal hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS/LHC experiment at CERN.

Since 2012 he has been participating in the AGATA collaboration in the development of the experiment's backend electronics. He also participates in the NEDA and GRIT experiments.

He is the author of more than 50 international publications in the first third or fourth of their categories. He has supervised 10 doctoral theses related to the development of electronics for data acquisition in high-energy experiments or nuclear physics and transfer to ICT companies.

He has participated in several research projects, 14 of them funded by the CICYT (6 of them as principal investigator), 2 by the European Union (one as an external advisor) and 5 by the Generalitat Valenciana (including several PROMETEO projects).

He is co-inventor of two patents in operation by the company FERMAX, S.A.U.

The scientific objectives pursued by his line of research are the establishment of a strong participation in international experiments both in the technical and scientific areas thanks to collaboration with other groups. In this sense, the medium-term objective is to consolidate the presence and importance of the pole formed by the AGATA-IFIC group of the Institute of Corpuscular Physics and the i2N group in the AGATA experiment.

Enrique A. Navarro-Camba has a degree in Physics (1988) and a PhD in Physics from the Universitat de València (1992), his Thesis supervisor was Vicente Such Belenguer, Professor of Applied Physics. 

From August 1988 to January 1989 he worked at Grupo de Mecánica del Vuelo S.A. (GMV S.A., Madrid).  He joined the University of Valencia in 1989, where he worked in R&D projects of the University in cooperation with Radiación & Microondas S.A. (RYMSA). He received scholarships from the Valencian Government and the Ministry of Education and Science of Spain. He was assistant professor in 1991, contracted professor in 1994, associated professor in 1997, and full professor in 2010.

He worked at the Communications Research Laboratory of McMaster University (ON, Canada) in 1994 and 1995, where he improved the non-orthogonal-FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) technique. He worked on the analysis of passive devices for beamforming networks (Spar-Aerospace, Quebec) and planar antennas (RIM-Blackberry, Waterloo).

At the University of Valencia he has been teaching subjects related to electromagnetism, electromagnetic waves, microwaves, antennas and advanced communications. He has taught in undergraduate, doctoral, graduate and master courses of Physics, Chemistry and School of Engineering (ETSE). He has served on several committees at the University of Valencia, and his teaching has contributed mainly to the Telecommunications degrees of the University of Valencia, the Master of Telecommunications Engineering, and the Master of Advanced Sciences of Modern Telecommunications, University of Valencia- University Pompeu Fabra,

In 1993 he joined the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory & Techniques, and later on all the IEEE and IEE (now IET) journals on antennas, microwaves and propagation. He worked in more than 30 competitive research projects of Spanish Government, Andalucia Government, and Valencian Goverment, in cooperation with the research team of Professor Juan A. Morente of the University of Granada and the Austrian Space Agency.

At the University of Valencia, he is in charge of the antenna measurement system, Anechoic Chamber, a large installation covering 5m x 5m x 8m, with near-field measurement and near-to-far-field transformation. He also maintains the WWLLN-Valencia (World Wide Lightning Location Network) measurement station that records electrical activity of atmospheric origin at a planetary level, covering the western Mediterranean, in collaboration with Prof. Robert Holzworth of the University of Washington.

Dr. Navarro's research interests focus on all aspects of electromagnetism, computational electromagnetism, electromagnetic waves, antennas, wave propagation and their measurements.

With regard to indicators of his research career, Dr. Javier Vijande has achieved the maximum number of research merits possible in his field (three). He has supervised six doctoral theses, all of them awarded the distinction of Excellent cum laude. According to the Scopus database, he is the author of 183 publications, most of them in Q1 and Q2 journals, which have accumulated a total of 3,489 citations, with an h-index of 31. Concerning participation in scientific forums, he has been a regular contributor at both national and international conferences, averaging at least one or two international conferences per year, several of them as an invited plenary speaker. His activity is further complemented by numerous research stays at prestigious international institutions and by active collaborations with groups from various organizations.

At present, Dr. Vijande leads a research line focused on medical physics, specifically radiotherapy. He is the head of the Medical Physics Group at the University of Valencia (https://go.uv.es/javia/GIUV-IRIMED), specialized in the application of Monte Carlo simulations to radiotherapy systems, both internal (brachytherapy) and external (teletherapy), with the aim of conducting dosimetric studies in clinical scenarios. Beyond his scientific contributions, this research line has also fostered collaborations with leading companies in the field, resulting in prototypes that are currently commercialized (go.uv.es/javia/Elekta, www.esteya.com, go.uv.es/javia/Inserto, among others).

His international profile is reflected in his active participation in regulatory bodies and major professional societies, particularly the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO). Within the AAPM, he chaired the Working Group on Model-Based Dose Calculation Algorithms in Brachytherapy (2017-2023), of which he remains a member, alongside the Brachytherapy Subcommittee and the Brachytherapy Source Registry Working Group. Since 2024, he has chaired the Working Group on Brachytherapy Dosimetry. These groups are tasked with developing test cases to validate new dose-calculation algorithms in clinical practice, reviewing brachytherapy seeds submitted for inclusion in the AAPM Source Registry (a prerequisite for hospital use), and, more broadly, coordinating clinical practice in brachytherapy within the North American and European contexts.

Within ESTRO, Dr. Vijande is a member of the BRAchytherapy PHYsics Quality Assurance System (BRAPHYQS) working group, where he contributes to the development of European recommendations for calibration, traceability, and clinical use of brachytherapy sources, and serves as a representative in the ESTRO Physics Guidelines Sub-Group. In addition, he has been appointed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as an expert to collaborate in the program of the Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear (IPEN-CNEN/SP, São Paulo) entitled Ensuring High-Quality Production of Brachytherapy Sources for Cancer Treatment.

Joan Vila Francés is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Universitat de València, Spain, a position he has held since 2017. His teaching focuses on the undergraduate and master's programmes in Data Science, with particular emphasis on natural language processing techniques. With an h-index of 20 and a total of 2440 citations, he has published 43 peer-reviewed articles indexed in JCR, including 20 in Q1 journals. His latest publications focus on artificial intelligence and data analysis applications, such as predictive maintenance in packaging industries, verbal fluency studies in mental health disorders, and crowd anomaly detection using multimodal video analysis, published in high-impact journals like Applied Sciences and the Journal of Psychiatric Research. Currently, he leads several significant projects, including a European Union-funded initiative on AI and robotics for smart cities and a Spanish Ministry of Science project on deep learning for unstructured data analysis. With extensive experience in research and industry collaborations, he has been the principal investigator for numerous projects, including partnerships with Fresenius Medical Care and Petrogas-GALP. Joan Vila Francés is also recognized for his contributions to academia and society, including co-founding a pharmaceutical spin-off leveraging AI in clinical settings and receiving the National Award for Career Excellence during his studies.

Biography
 

Nadia Yahlali is a Tenured Professor at the University of Valencia (UV), member of the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC) and of the IFIC Neutrino group. Her current research focus since year 2022 is neutrino physics with particle accelerator within the DUNE experiment, being involved in the experimental development of the Photon Detection System (PDS) and the cryogenic Temperature Monitoring System (TMS) of the DUNE Far Detectors. She was previously involved in the NEXT (Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC) during years 2011-2022,  and in the SuperNEMO experiment during years 2009-2011, being both experiments dedicated to the neutrinoless doble-beta decay search.

Aside from the neutrino-research projects, she has contributions to experimental nuclear physics and applications of nuclear physics to medicine (radiation dosimetry for brachytherapy) and environmental radioprotection. She was member of the TRITIUM collaboration funded by the European program Interreg SUDOE, during years 2016-2020, for the development and operation of a tritium-in-water monitor for the radiological surveillance of water discharges from nuclear power plants. She was membre of the TAPS (Two-Arms Photon Spectrometer) collaboration during years 1998-2004, for research in subthreshold production of hard photons and neutral pions in heavy ion reactions at GANIL (France) and KVI (The Netherlands). She was also membre of the HADES collaboration at GSI (Darmstadt, Germany) during years 1996-2000, and was responsible for the design and installation of the Time-of-Flight Hodoscopes of the Pion Beam Factory at the GSI accelerator SIS, for experiments with the meson spectrometer HADES.

N. Yahlali obtained her graduation and Master degrees from the University USTHB of Algiers and in 2004 her PhD from the University of Valencia.  She has directed, 10 BCs degree theses, 25 Master theses, 2 completed PhD theses and 2 PhD these in progress. She has 94 publications indexed in Web of Science, and about 40 peer-review records from indexed journals from Elsevier (Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics research A;  Spectrochimica Acta Part A, Physics Letters B), MDPI (Applied Sciences; Particles; Sensors), Oxford University Press (Radiation Protection Dosimetry), IOP Publising (Journal of Instrumentation).
